Looking for window scrolling utility for WB 3.1
Cheers m8s! I'm looking for a utility that allows for (smooth) scrolling a window's contents when using the slide bar at the bottom of the window. I know, there is Scalos, but is there any tool that does the same for my beloved WB 3.1?

i have such effect with AmigaSys 4 - installed workbench 3.1.
i have no clue what produces the effect. but there is no scalos installed. i can see for examples MCP, FreeWheel, AutoUpdateWB, Drag & Drop, FPPrefs. one thing I installed is the workbench.library remake by PeterK. i'll have a closer look, maybe i can find the tool in question what i did not wrote above, I use WinUAE on a RTG UAE screen - I do not hope it is a feature of this screenmode/driver :/ Edit: good news, switching to PAL Hires Lace 256 colors, the scrolling effect is still there edit2: not 100% sure but I think it is the new workbench.library install new icon.library and the new workbench.library by PeterK. new icon.library and patched workbench.library in LIBS: edit your startup-sequence - very first lines: Code:
Version >NIL: workbench.library 45 If WARN LoadResident >NIL: LIBS:icon.library LoadResident >NIL: LIBS:workbench.library REBOOT EndIf Edit: the workbench.library v45.127 - which you need to patch the PeterK workbench.library, is part of the BoingBag-1 ( update of 3.9 system). with this library and the patches by PeterK you can create the latest workbench.library 45.132. note: you only need the workbench.library from the BB1 package, nothing else. Indeed, the window scrolling ability is a feature of the workbench.library v44 or better.

Great !!! I will give this a try as soon as my wife gives me some spare time from the kids.
Btw. - I'm a long time user of PeterK's icon.library - it's probably THE best improvement I have applied to my WB 3.1 |

extract the BoingBag39-1.lha, and look for "BoingBag3.9-1/AmigaOS-Update" Quote:
it gets extracted using winrar - it does ask for the password above, just tested AmigaOS-Update/Libs/workbench.library : workbench.library 45.127 (21.2.2001) Last edited by emufan; 03 January 2014 at 17:36. |

Thanks for this info, guys!
(I have often wondered about this. Saves dumping console output to a file when ScalOS is not installed. ) |

I have now successfully built, loaded and used workbench.library 45.132. The good news is that the window contents now indeed scroll with the slide bar being dragged So yes, it seems to be a feature of newer workbench.library versions.
The bad news is, however, that as soon as I open a window with icons (for example displaying a volume's contents), chip mem drops by around 260KB and doesn't free up anymore. I have also used the latest icon.library 46.4.330, but no difference. My setup is basically a plain WB3.1 with NewIcons & FreshIcons and a bunch of patches: - CardPatch - CMQ030 - BlazeWCP - PatchOpenWB (for NewIcons) - FBlit (no custom cfg) - FText - SetPatch 43.6b - scsi.device 43.47b1 (also tried 43.46b8) I also used "IconsToFastMem" from the icon.library package from Aminet, but it didn't help either. FWIW, I have tried both LoadModule and LoadResident, but again no difference. Only when I do NOT load workbench.library 45.132, but use the built-in one that comes with my 3.1 ROM then chip mem stays constantly at around 1900KB. Am I missing something obvious? What other data could I post to further narrow down the issue? I have read about some Prefs setting for icons to use fast mem, but I couldn't find it on my WB 3.1. Is this maybe an OS3.9 only feature? Now that I am sooo close to a solution, I really want it working properly Thanks for looking |

about the chip-mem problem, i have no clue. my winuae config with new icon 46.4.327 and wb.library 45.132 shows 1612KB chip Hires-Lace PAL 8 colors screen wb lib at $10099174; icon lib at $1012e688 , both fast-ram. opening a huge folder with many icons -> 1300kb chip, closing that folder, 1612kb again. did you compare with PeterK demo-adf? look at his startup-sequence, maybe you find a tool you need, or should remove from your config. maybe a "feature" of latest icon.lib? can you try an older version? for sure something, PeterK can help to fix, or explain Last edited by emufan; 04 January 2014 at 10:18. |

Hi emufan,
thanks for your support I have already tested with an even earlier version of icon.library (46.4.272) and the result was the same... Maybe I should clarify my observations a bit further: When the drop to ~ 1620KB happens (same amount of chip ram that you see btw), it stays there. So opening windows with loads of icons doesn't let the chip ram go down even further - it's using fast ram only obviously. So this tells me that very probably icon.library correctly makes use of fast ram. The real question is why this drop happens in the first place. Maybe there is something inside of workbench.library 45.132 that eats the chip ram? Cheers ! |

Tried a few additional things This doesn't let me alone...
- The drop in chip mem also happens if I open (for the first time) a window that doesn't contain any icons (like my RAM: volume). - Using the icon.library's demo adf, I also get around 1620KB of free chip mem, so this is probably just normal (maybe, who knows). - I downloaded WBCtrl from Aminet and added "WBCtrl IMT=FAST" to my startup-sequence. I checked with "WBCtrl Q" and both workbench and icon.library are flagged as using fast ram. The drop in chip mem remains the same, however. - I tried WBAllocFast from Aminet, which (I think) does the same as WB2Fast - redirect every workbench chip mem alloc to fast ram. Regarding the amount of free chip mem, it works beautifully Free chip mem stays solid at around 1900KB. However, I get corrupted icons as soon as I click on them De-selecting the garbled icon (for example by clicking in the background) returns the icon display back to normal. - Just to repeat: If I use my 3.1 ROM built-in workbench.library, there is no drop in chip mem at all... It stays solid at around 1900KB. The drop only happens with workbench.library 45.x If I could only try WB2Fast But it seems to be part of OS3.5, which I don't have (and actually don't plan to use either). Maybe it does a few things a little different compared to WBAllocFast. Otherwise, I really don't know how people manage to have almost the entire A1200's 2MB chip mem free... |

sounds intresting. i suggest, reporting your findings to PeterK, in his Icon.library thread.
i'm sure he can find a sultion for WBAllocFast/icon corruption issue. i'll take a look for WB2Fast later, worth a shot edit: WB2FAST & WBAllocFast graphic glitches - someone already tested it Mad-Matt on same thread talks about "cgx-aga and planes2fast". (cgx-aga 040+ ?! ). |

Just posted my observations in PeterK's icon.library thread http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=64079 Hope he can help...
EDIT: Changing some FBlit properties does the trick You can find them here: http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=...&postcount=602 Now chip mem stays solid at around 1900KB. Awesome EDIT 2: Forgot to mention that with the FBlit changes, no WBAllocFast or similar is required. Therefore, I don't get garbled icons either.
