Nintendo's hardware tends to be pretty solid too, even the Gamecube is very robust (unlike Sony's PS2 and all the Sega consoles except, maybe, the Megadrive/Genesis).

what's not robust about the PS2? Still working fine for me and I have two of them: the older and the newer model

PS2's do seem a bit iffy. Mate at work has the problem where the ribbon cable for the laser on the optical drives sticks up too high and puts scratches in the data side of game discs.

I know you can stick the ribbon cable back down but surely you buy the Sony brand so you don't have to do stuff like that!

I know what you mean. My current TV is a Sony 32" widescreen. The picture is lovely but it doesn't like NTSC DVD's and the built in FreeView decoder is prone to rebooting in the middle of shows!!! I knew I should have got a Panny!

Panasonic next time methinks, especially as it'll be a LCD when finances allow

Sony quality has been going down hill for a while. I remember back when SONY was still making CRT Monitors (I have a few from the 1990's still working great) they decided instead of using the recessed plastic SONY emblem in the front of the case they would just print the name on the plastic. They just started cutting corners to save pennies while still charging top dollar.

I remember when SONY walkmans were all the rage, now ipods own SONY.

As far as stereo equipment goes I allways purchased Technics, better quality then SONY at a lower price.. ofcourse Panasonic decided to kill off Technics a few years ago (Bastards!).

Well another good report on Amiga robustness, finally got the back bedroom decorated so the Amiga has come out the loft and has pride of place on the desks. Don't think it's been used in two years, but of course it fired up first time and works a treat

Rest of the room

It's true that the Amigas are remarkably robust, but I can assure you, they were not made with that in mind.. The components just happened to be a bit better back then.

So many C-64s and later A500s were dead on arrival, that it was a real problem at Commodore at one point. You probably know that they were an "as cheap as possible" company, so the components were sourced for the lowest prices.
