OSX (El Cap) "The application "FS-UAE Launcher" can't be opened."

I'm having the same issue with FS-UAE on OSX El Cap as this post:

Though I've boiled it down to: if I install FS-UAE Launcher in a subdirectory of /Applications it will not work. If I move the subdirectory ("Fun") with FS-UAE in it to another location (like my home dir) OR if I move FS-UAE Launcher (or Arcade) to /Applications, then it works.



The error I'm getting is a popup window from OSX saying "The application "FS-UAE Launcher" can't be opened."


I also tried moving the .plist file for FS-UAE out of the way in ~/Library/Preferences but that didn't help either.


I've known a few other apps that behave like this, but the vast majority of the apps I install are in subdirectories of /Applications, so I'd like to help figure this out and get the OSX .app updated.

Does it work if you temporarily disable gatekeeper to allow apps from anywhere?

sudo spctl --master-disable
