Water Effect in Shadow of the Beast 2

I've been ripping sprites and tiles from SOTB2 but I'm kinda stuck with the water tiles. You can see the water effect here:

[ Show youtube player ]

The savestate only yields four water tiles, none animated and all of the "top of waterfall" variety.

Did they use some kind of graphic trick to create the flowing water effect on the fly, maybe further warping the waterfall effect to create the river (which are different, but similar, tiles)?

It looks like it's a simple palette rotation.

If you are not familiar with it here are some good modern examples of it's use.

I'm not familiar with the tiles you ripped but it can be that the lower tiles are just stretched versions of the upper ones. If the screen would stay put for a while it would be easier to observe patterns emerging.

The ripped water tiles (size x3):

The colors might be off, I had to eyeball the colors from a game screenshot.

Here they are as a GIF ((in random order)

I would say so, the colour of the water is specific to the water and not shared elsewhere onscreen, so there are no colour cycling artifacts elsewhere.

I suspect its display frame 1, colour cycle, display frame 2, colour cycle, display frame 3, etc, etc.
