RUGCD available

Hi all,

My CD32 console is not doing well, that's why I provide you with this fine RUGCD (Rather Untested Game Compilation Disc) which contains a lot of games running with CD32Load and remapped controls.

First, when booting, AGS shows up. To skip it and switch back to AmigaGuide Launcher (that I adapted), just hold LMB.

Contains latest CD32load 0.21 to be released tonight too.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/sbgxprz0hd...games.zip?dl=0

If you can test it on real hardware and tell me which game works and which doesn't (just complete the google sheet in the proper column: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...4LI/edit#gid=0)

bye

I'll test right away!

[edit1]
Hmmmm... I tried to load Argh and it kept accessing disk and wouldnt do anything. Now I resetted it and the menu wont load.

[edit2]
Power cycled the machine and the menu showed up again. Selected Adams Family and it worked. so i guess Arghh does something weird to the system?

[edit 3]
Something weird is going on, resetted the machine after playing Addams Family for a while and again the menu doesnt show up. Cd32 keeps trying to access disc but nothing happens.

[edit 4]
Now Aargh booted, this is strange.
And I keep getting problems after reset, most times it locks up, some times the games menu boots fine.

[edit 5]
I'm getting lockups before the boot menu even after cold boot sometimes. Could this be related to the amount of files on CD?

OK guys, I got all the way to "Chuck Rock 2".
I added my findings in the database.
Someone take over for a bit, I gotta sleep!

WARNING: Cannon Fodder 2 almost? maybe? kills my CD drive, made an awful noise of banging the CD head against its limits or something??? No idea. Never heard this shit happen ever before. It was GRINDING.
I wouldn't try it. Dunno which other slave can cause this reaction, be careful Can you look into that jotd? I don't want to kill my CD32 drive testing stuff.

I still run onto erratic behavior of the compilation, with it hanging when reset. I figured out that if I let the CD go to the Amiga CD 32 spinning disc anim, chances the menu will show up are better. but sometimes this trick doesn't work. I have no idea why it does this, this is the only disc that behaves this way.

Funny Akira, I have the same problems here (grinding and stuff). It's random and can happen to any game really.
Both happens with RN loader and Psygore loader.

Maybe your drive has a problem just like mine. Because even with standard bootup it sometimes lockup (on normal AmigaOS CD access!)

(not my fault if startup sequence won't load, I think CD32 drives are not designed to last 25+ years)

BTW you can access an alternate menu by holding LMB. Try that too.

Try cleaning the laser. Sounds like its loosing track and then freaking out.
This normally happens if theres a problem focusing on the disc.

That cannot be. Everything else works fine. I never had this issue with any other disc I tried, and I tried many. There must be something here causing it. ll the home made compilations I ever tried work fine. All commercial games work fine. Al unnoficial conversions work fine. This has been teh only disc ever showing this behavior.

If it is related to it losing track, perhaps some bug is making it do so. Something related to this disc is making both things occur. Maybe t's how the disc is made? I have no idea. But this isn't a drive issue in my case. If I had a problem with my drive, I would have noticed, but it reads everything without issues, even those people that have issues with CDXL animations, I don't have that.

Why would it be that my drive is bad if only this disc causes issues?

There's also a lot of random "cannot initialize CD drive" errors on some games.

That could be, depending on layout of disc too.

I think the data's physical location on a disc is very important to a CD32 and perhaps something of how this disc was made is making the CD32 act weird.

Again, if my drive had issues, I would notice them in other games. I don't. Everything works fine. Absolutely everything. I went back and tested other games after this happened to see if somehow maybe now my CD32 got ruined by that issue, and everything works.

I think the grinding issue needs to be looked at because I feel it's potentially dangerous to the console.

It won't damage it. The laser is designed to slip if it gets jammed. Hence the grinding noise.

I dunno, I don't want it to be doing that.

I was just thinking, there was ample talk in this thread about loading times optimization for CD32. It was said that if your data is on the outside rim of the disc, it'd be accessed faster. I am wondering, because I see this disc is all in the inner half of it, if it would be better to put a dummyfile at the beginning of the disc, to fill it all up, and put the menu files all the way n the outer rim. Perhaps this is why there are access issues all around.

I was just stating, it won't damage it. I used to work on these CD-ROM (common SONY HiFi mech) mechs for over 10 years.

Disc spins slower once laser gets to second half of disc. So error correction is more crucial.

AAARGH! gets to the "Put Joystick in Port 2" (after a long time on a white screen)
and then does nothing.

The Addams Family works, but some of the baddies colour cycle a bit.
HELP (FWD) + DEL (BWD) whilst Paused (PLAY) brings up the Exit/Continue Screen.

AFTER BURNER title screen appears (+ music plays) then does nothing.

AGONY works fine - can even skip levels with FWD.

ALIEN BREED is all over the shop --- flickery slow-mo and buttons swap functions

ALIEN3 seems fine.

Main menu often does not appear on warm reset --- Needs full Power Off
Left Mouse Button Boot = Nothing !

See, this is strange. I experience NONE of these problems on my CD32.

So yeah,it can't be that everybody has a broken CD32. There must be a problem with CD image authoring that causes this and all the "unable to initialize CD drive" problems.

Only a few more tests tonight, got up to "Elfmania" and posted my findings in the spreadsheet. It's been a long day :/

I have skipped a second testing of games giving me a "unable to initialize CD drive" error (like Citadel or Elf), I don't believe this is a CD32Load issue rather an ISO issue. But there's no way I can tell until we can assure 100% the ISO isn't the problem Usually if I boot again the issue goes away but tonight I am tired and don't really want to waste too much time retrying ater that error.

Nobby seems to have the same issues as us (and is testing the same games I tested )

Alien Breed: the flickering is because there's a sticky "pause" button. A few presses on "play" or any button fixes it and it works fine then.
Aaargh works here.

Time to rebuild another ISO, this time using ISOCD.

Nobby you're testing the same games I did and having pretty much the same results.
Look at the Spreadsheet, I got all the way to Elfmania. If you can, test past that.

protection screens can be passed with "return", i.e. yellow button by defaut with cd32load.

There are a lot of red screens... Psygore said he fixed his routine but now I'm beginning to doubt it.

Good news: Using ISOCD the CD is really more stable. I have updated spreadsheet.
Doesn't mean that more games work, but CD boots every time, so Akira you were right.

I hope Patrick our ISO expert can figure out the differences between a hacked mkisofs image and a ISOCD image.

And CD32Load PRELOAD option has been fixed: Archon works for instance.

Edit: Will post a new image on my dropbox ASAP. So far, all "unable to init CD drive" have disappeared !!

On my compilation, buttons have been remapped so you can start games with green, yellow, FWD, RWD...
