real hard drive winuae

Im using winuae to set a new hard drive (2.5"). Winuae sees the hard drive and i can add it, but when i boot into workbench with the install.adf, the HD tool box doesnt see it. Im on windows 64bit and i have tried running as admin with the winuae.exe -disableharddrivesafetycheck added.

Any suggestions please? I know the hard drive is fine becuase i have taken it from a working amiga.

When you add the HD try selecting A600/A1200/A4000 as the connector instead of UAE.

HDToolbox looks for HD's on the scsi.device by default.

How and where you've added the hard disk 2.5, if you can help here is how to connect the hard disk 2.5 my CD32.

Run hdtoolbox with uaehf.device command line parameter. "system/hdtoolbox uaehf.device"

Read "CF / SD and large drives FAQ" in hardware forum first if you plan to use it in real hardware!

In the HDToolBox icon tooltypes there is an entry saying:

scsi_device_name=scsi.device

Change it to:

scsi_device_name=uaehf.device

Save and load it. Remember to change it back if you use that Workbench install in a real Amiga.

Or put the first one in brackets and enter the second one on a new line so they look like this (entries in brackets are ignored in tooltypes):

(scsi_device_name=scsi.device)
scsi_device_name=uaehf.device

Try "IDE (Auto)" or "SCSI (Auto)" in Harddrive settings.

Size of drive? Size of partition(s)? Filesystem? IDE or UAE controller? Did you read the harddrive FAQ?

Most common cause is >4G drive and 32-bit wrap around overwrote RDB blocks.

Thanks for reply Toni. 60gb 2'5. FFS. IDE. Yes I read it but maybe not understand all.

The partitions are 200mb, 200mb, 1400mb, 1400mb ( less that 4gb total)

Its what i have done before with no problems.

What do you mean by 32 bit wrap round? Any suggestions please?

It is safe partitioning (even without patches) if all partitions are inside first 4G of drive.

"UNK" means RDB is not detected anymore (Does it still detect correct drive name and size? If they are wrong or corrupted: hardware incompatibility)

Do you get any extra log messages in winuelog.txt?

"empty=1" part can't be right. Did you run winuae as administrator?

Are you sure about this? You have to consider that the display of HDToolbox cannot show numbers bigger than 4gb (4096mb), either. So if it shows 200mb then this could as well be 4296mb or 8392mb and so on. For such a large HDD it might be difficult to tell just by looking at the diagram. You should enable advanced options and calculate from the number of cylinders how big the partitions really are.

Hi Thomas, yes im sure. It maybe 1400mb or 1402mb but always around that figure. The HD tools for the workibench install disk only goes up to 8gb anyway but i never go past 4

It looks like IOCTL_DISK_GET_DRIVE_GEOMETRY returns no disk condition (unfortunately this is not logged).

How do you connect the drive? USB or IDE? Have you tried reconnecting/rebooting?

I have found the problem. I went into computer management in windows before i opened winuae and it pmpoted me to initialise disk to mbr or gpt or something. I think it wiped the boot record when i pressed OK .I re did everything and now ok.
