Nice read! Sickening and nice. It explains a whole lot more than only "whatever happened to Core?"

Yes. It's interesting how the industry was beginning to move in the direction of franchises at this time. sadly we now have assassins creed 20 or whatever.

Hard to believe that core never used design documents or much planning for their games in the early days.

Sadly the industry (and the customers) never learned the lesson from the Tomb Raider 'franchise' (also a really horrible allegory). Today we have so many 'just more of the same' game series and they sell just fine no matter how dull and/or horribly broken they are...

Thanks for sharing Adrian A very interesting read.

That's a great article - I hope modern developers take note.

I still own the original Tomb Raider (Saturn) and Thunderhawk 2: Firestorm (Saturn).

Yup, it started a trend. I guess the power of the original psx made it viable to create elaborate games that could be believable and franchised.
With a large install base they could reach many customers too.

They do, that's why lesser known games such as Ori and the Blind Forest and Wasteland 2 exist.

But that doesn't change publishers who paid REALLY close attention and are applying the improved formula to this day.
