Sharing a link between Amiga and PC
What is the easiest (and best) way to send a link I copied to clipboard on my PC to my Amiga?
Do I need to network them first? Unfortunately Samba was a bit unreliable last time I tried. Has anything changed? |

Store it in a text file and transfer the file to the other machine, whichever way you use to transfer files.
There is no magic connection between machines. If you want to transfer the file by cable, you have to use network or nullmodem. Otherwise you need a data medium like a floppy disk or a CD or a CF card (whatever your Amiga can read). |

I'm sure there should be an easy way to do this. |

You might write two scripts (one on pc side and one on amiga side) lauched via short key that send the link string via file to amiga where the file is read.

How do I do it on the PC side? The only way for me to send a file is by using Amiga Explorer since I do not have any transparent network connection between the PC's and Amigas.

You could buy an external network drive (a.k.a. NAS, Network Attached Storage) and access it from both the PC and the Amiga. These drives usually run some kind of Samba which is compatible to Amiga's SMBFS.
One could think of a script which regularly checks the change date of a file on the shared drive and if it has changed, copy the file to the clipboard. The other way could be done, too. Whenever the clipboard changes, its contents would be copied to the shared file. |

Probably yes, if it is recognised in Windows' network neighborhood.

It looks to be similar to my Linksys (WRT160NL), and the USB drive on that works like a charm under Linux, Windows, OS3, OS4 and MOS. Great for quick sharing of files, especially if you add SMBFS to your network startup scripts so it always mounts a shared drive when it connects.

So all I need is SMBFS on my Amiga and a script to copy from and to the clipboard on both PC and Amiga?
What should SMBFS script look like? |

Talk about overcomplicating things. Cant you just use a short-url service and write down the 6 or so characters it provides you with?

To mount the shared drive you just need one line with SMBFS and the required arguments to suit your NAS. As for the copy & paste script that's a little more complicated. Perhaps some sort of monitoring daemon would be more efficient than a script... I'll look into it, but there was some sort of net printer ARexx script that did something similar - maybe that's a good place to start.
Edit: SMBFS line should look like: SMBFS volume="MyNAS" workgroup="WORKGROUP" service=//192.168.1.254/sharename Or you can use SMBMounter to do it with a GUI. [/shameless plug] Actually, I'll have a look at adding such functionality to SMBMounter... Last edited by Daedalus; 20 November 2014 at 11:32. |

I'll take a look once I finish setting the Amiga up.
Having problems with two of my Zorro cards, zorro slots and scsi configuration at the moment. Happy times :P |
