Playing audio CD through the RCA outputs

Hello,

This may probably have been discussed many times, but I was asking myself if there is a program than can manage playing audio CD through paula?

PlayCD takes control of the CD drive but the audio goes through the jack connector located at the CD drive pannel.

There is no reason this should not be possible as it only a matter of software which has to take the digital audio data through the IDE connector, then after converting to 8 bits format send it to Paula.

I was using EasyAcdda (aminet I think) for this but will try out Thomas's suggestion as soon as I get a chance. (I don't have a separate CD out connector on my drive as its SATA).

One of the earliest programs to do this was Yacdp. I remember being really impressed seeing my A600 playing cd audio through paula via squirrel scsi at the time. I think Songplayer was another which had the function.

If an unexpanded A600 can do it, you would have though it would have been trivial to add it to cd games back then for those needing 030/040 power anyway for the games. All those rts and first person games. t-zero ect. Everyone could have experienced mixed cd audio + effects mixed into 2channel 14bit

Try to drag the CD2:Uninitialised icon into the DAPlayer window.

After quieting DAPlayer ther is 100% CPU usage on task "DAPlayer Read Ahead" when a AIFF file was selected first. "DAPlayer" task was also visible in Scout but don`t eat CPU. After quiet Scout DAPlayer tasks also quiet sometimes. Click on stop or pause doesn`t change CPU usage behaviour. Sometimes the DAPlayer task survive quiet of DAPlayer window with full CPU usage. Some time later the tasks are also gone. Strange.

Tested on A1200 040 AGA OS3.1.

Another option is to use a CDDA filesystem to access CD tracks as files, and play them in HippoPlayer in 14 bit. However, without double scan video modes, you won't get the best possible quality. Also, when using HippoPlayer, make sure you turn off Ahi in it's preferences window (slow, and not needed for this).

I have tried your program Thomas, but was not able to make it work. When I start DAPlayer, it shows up a system message saying "Please insert volume Work in any drive".

I click cancel, then when an audio CD is inserted in the drive, no tracks are displayed, and it is not possible to select the CD ROM unit, which appears yet correctly under workbench as CD2:CDDA and CD2:Uninitialised.

hen I try to play an MP3 file, the system completely freezes and the only way to go out of that is the RESET.

See his advice about dragging the CD2 icon over the window. Worked for me . But currently I still use easyacdda being honest.

I've tried this method, and the tracks are correctly listed, but now I get an error message:

Unable to open 'openpci.library" version 1.

I have OS 3.9 installed.

Check your libs folder for the lib.

If you have a PCI board, install openpci.library.

If you don't, delete EMU10KX from Devs:AHI and Devs:AudioModes.

Do not install drivers for which you don't have the hardware.

I found that once I installed cdda-filesystem, after ejecting a disc, reinserting would not cause it to show up again. Might be just just something on my system setup. Removing cdda-filesystem fixed this.

I think I shall stick simply with EasyAcdda as it is limited but just works for playing CDs. I am unlikely to want to do anything else with CDDA files on my miggy, or need to 'see' them via the filesystem.

Cheers for all the advice though.

Will still follow this thread and Whitebirds success, as might change my mind!

another method if not the best one is song player

http://aminet.net/mus/play/SongPlayer.lha

in options you select the scsi.device and unit you are using then you press the cd button and songs appears in the lister
ie depending the drive you are using you must select type: auto, toshiba etc

In case you want to try it anyway, open the CDDA mount file in a text editor, find the Control line, and change it to this:

Code:
    Control = "ENDIAN=LITTLE FORMAT=AIFF COMMANDSET=ATAPI POLLCDSTATE"
Without the COMMANDSET=ATAPI POLLCDSTATE part, some drives won't handle disk changes properly.

After trying this myself, I say: Don't bother with CDDA filesystem + HippoPlayer, because it sucks. Doable with double scan modes, sucks completely without double scan modes.

I thought I'd suggest this because you might get nice quality in non-double scan screen modes this way, but it seems the only way to get good quality is to down sample CD tracks with SOX on the peecee

Given that I only have the miggy connected to an old portable stereo as the speaker, I don't have high audio expectations. I also don't see myself transferring files via CD etc or manipulating cdda files. I was going to try your suggestion 're disk changes but might not now bother if you reckon there is no point. Easyacdda does a good enough job for me I reckon.
