*cough* even though I only know how to program in Java and basic I'm still not too thrilled about Java for several reasons
1. It's too damn slow 2. It's being abused on webpages just like animated gifs and flash animations are 3. It's darn slow 4. MS java engine screws up on many simpler tasks. 5. It's darn slow. |

Sorry, but I must <strongly>disagree</strongly> on the speed issues here...
If you haven't been using the JDK1.4.1 or its runtime version ~ java plugin -- than yes, speed is a issue. New Sun's VM is using a lots of optimalisations in processing of your code ~ Java HotSpots and the speed is getting roughtly ~ 60-80% of the same routine as native C++ code. However this doesn't apply much for applets as most of them are written in AWT (SWING is a bit faster) because they don't access system resources (sound, gfx, ...) directly due fact that Java is simply multiplatform language and you can't do nothing about it... My usage of Java is purly J2EE ~ EJBs, servlets running on its own app server and must say that I also do some PHP/ASP programming but it doesn't come even closer in terms of speed, elegance of the language itself (proper OOP), code reusability, large commercial / opensource community and lots of other reasons -- simply nothing beats Java on this... (.net $ucks) |

I don't think anyone here said .net didn't suck. And no I haven't tried 1.4. To keep up to date with the school's version of Java I'm still on 1.3 because upgrading might cause problems in projects programming when suddently some of the methods are deprecated which happens a lot between versions. For some reason the school still only has 1.2 JDK installed which means that a deal of times you can look up a routine name, and then end up getting told you can't use it anymore.

Well, the speed diffrence between 1.2 and 1.4 is VERY significant, so you should give it a try...
![]() And also try to avoid javac and use only jikes compiler as that improves performance! |

On the subject of browsers, does anyone else check out the server statistics? There are all sorts of really interesting stats, including one for browsers used to visit EAB. Surprisingly enough, IE is top by a mile.
OS used: of all visitors to EAB, only 0.4% use AmigaOS to get there. In contrast, Windows accounts for 96.2%. I am part of the 0.4%. ![]() |

you just have to use Amiga or Linux os/browsers as client for the web
![]() it's up to users to change the stats. |
