Workbench and colours

Hi all

Again another newbie question. I am running W3.1 on A1200, and selected 256colours. (Can I get more). When I run AWeb etc, I am sure I am not seeing that many colours, feels like a lot less? Is this a config in AWeb? or just a limitation?

You can't get more than that without a separate graphics card [or HAM8 mode, but that's generally not an option]. Personally I'd stick with something like 64 or 32 colours for speed reasons when using AGA modes.

Still, I don't see why AWeb wouldn't have the 256 colours available. But it doesn't guarantee any particular visual result, that depends on how the colours in the palette are chosen.

Arr ok that makes sense, it seemed things looked better when they were 16/32 colours

Default color selection is pretty bad with AmigaOS I must admit. For best results youre best off using like FullPalette and defining your colors yourself. This can be a bit tedious, but with some trial and error can produce much better results than letting the OS deal with it all.
Additionally, as suggested, steer clear of 256 colors when using AGA, its way too slow. 16, or 32 colors is probably the best choice, not just for speed reasons (64 is fast enough), but rather because using more will eat up chip ram quickly, even when using FBlit and FText (install them if you havent already. It'll speed up the system, and free up cip ram (basically uses other ram for gfx and text operations)). You can get away with 64, but you'll run out very quickly when trying to multitask a few apps on different screens.
