A4000 Setup advice needed....

Well after a couple years of accumulating parts, I want to put my dream A4000D system together.

I would like to ask opinions of what combinations of hardware would be the most desirable setup to you and why you would setup that way.

Goals are to have a nice all-around, multi-OS boot retro system. I want to start playing with the Video Toaster/Flyer 4000 and would really like to get into Lightwave. I would really like to play with Amiga OS4.0 with the PPC card since I have never had a chace to before.

I have a couple A4000's, so one could be dedicated to the VideoToaster setup.

Hardware I have available:

CPU'S- PPC203@233 w/060@50, WarpEngine 040

HARD DRIVES - SCSI Hard Drive, External SCSI, CF-to-IDE, IDE Hard Drive, CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives.

VIDEO- Picasso IV, Cybervision 64, Retina Z3 and an Indivision 4000

MONITORS - VGA CRT, LCD, 1084's or Multiscan commodore monitors

Video Toaster/Flyer Card

Is a PPC card in a Toaster System a waste?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Run OS 3.x for now and wait for OS 4.1 to be released for Classic PPC Amigas.

Make an über-Amiga and use it as it must be used: demos, games, impressing people that don't know about computers (Atari & Windows users), put the Toaster on the more modest one.

The Toaster can run smoothly on a plain 3.1 AGA setup with a 030 CPU, no need for graphic cards, SCSI drives (but on Flyer, of course) or other perfuming.

I guess it really depends what OS you want to run. You mentioned multi-boot, but there are different "best" choices depending on what OS you choose.

for OS 3.9, you could argue an Elbox Mediator and Voodoo 4 is the best, if you wanted to run Warp3D games and demos (with your Cyberstorm PPC).

Others may say a Radeon is a better choice in that situation because it's a bit faster at 2D and has much more gfx memory, of which you can assign some as FAST ram.

Some may say the Picasso 4 is a better gfx card because of the overall functionality (flicker fixer, sound card expansion, TV tuner (pal) expansion), etc...

for me, mostly in OS 4.x on Classic, the best configuration is an Elbox Mediator, Cyberstorm PPC, and Radeon graphics card. For hard disk, using the Cyberstorm PPC SCSI is best, either with real UW SCSI drive or an ACARD SCSI->IDE adapter, which could then be connected to an IDE-->CF adapter.

Still others will say the Cybervision PPC + Cyberstorm PPC is the best configuration due to the direction connection. Others may continue to say the G-REX PCI expansion is best...

As for your video toaster, some may say AGA output is best.

But it looks like you have a good set of hardware there to experiment

Thanks for the input all!

The reason I was at first thinking of keeping the PPC in the Toaster/Flyer setup would be to speed things up in Lightwave, but I am starting to think that this would be a waste. Am I right or wrong?

I'm thinking of setting the systems up in the following way... what is your opinions on the best hardware combinations:

System 1:

Warpengine 040
SCSI HD off of the WarpEngine.
CDROM and CF-to-IDE off of A4000 IDE
Video Toaster/Flyer Cards
Indivision for AGA
Cybervision64 for Workbench (Will it play nice with the Toaster?)
XSurf for networking
OS3.1 or 3.9

System 2:

Cyberstorm PPC
Large SCSI HD off of the CSPPC
DVDROM off of A4000 IDE
PIV for RTG Graphics.
Deneb for everything else (still need to buy)
Multiboot OS4.0, MorphOS & 3.9

Anything missing?

Seeing that lightwave is only 68k code the ppc would not give much advantage unless it is an 060. Vs the. Warp engine. The warp engine is what I have in my toaster flyer. To speed lightwave up, what I do is the scene on the amiga (easier because I know thevamiga version better), the render it on a dredded. Output the files to iff the. Splice them to flyerclip on the amiga.
