Pinball Illusions AGA -crashing with WinUAE 2.3.0.

Hi guys.

As per topic title; Pinball Illusions worked absolutely fine, until I updated to WinUAE 2.3.0. The intro loads then game crashes and resets. Tried changing various configurations with no luck.

Anyone had some problem or can recommend configurations so I can re-play this classic game please?

Thanks in advance.

ADF. Sorry. Would help if I provided that information in first place. The four adf files were downloaded from Planet Emulation.

You can see the CRC32 of the disks when you open them with WinZip or WinRAR (maybe check the settings to display them). Please post them here and I'll have a look later.

Maybe you should disconnect/connect virtual external floppy drive.

Seems to me disk 1 is the problem as it's the only one that is different, although your version is the one that's up on the file server, dunno where the hell I got my disk 1 from :s

EDIT: Just tried disk 1 from the file server, which is the same CRC and it works flawlessly, maybe your zip file is damaged?

Hmmm. Now over the years I've used WinUAE, I've always uncompressed the zip files. For some bizarre reason I've just tried Pinball Illusions again, this time, the zipped adf files, and it worked! Seems the latest version of WinUAE doesn't like the uncompressed file. Confused now lol.

btw, thank you for all your advice and help, guys.

This is very strange, I've just unzipped the File server version, and once again, it ran flawlessly.

Maybe it's because it was an old zip archive (.zip) (although that shouldn't make any difference) as we now use .7z for zipping the .adf's. Other than That, I have no idea :s

Downloaded the four disks from Planetemu, extracted the ADFs, used the A1200 non-expanded quickstart with middle-compatibility setting and it worked. It 'hangs' on track 38 for several seconds (maybe 5-10). Please attach both logs (check 'Create log file' on the 'Miscellaneous' panel) for Toni.

Ah. You've mentioned "middle-compatibility" settings. I've not tried this and never had to before with previous versions of WinUAE. Will report back and let you know what happens.

Oops. Sorry Toni. Both files attached.

I used to have the complete TOSEC collection but got mislaid when I moved. I'm in process of rebuilding my collection. However, I've recently found out about EAB file server so I really should be downloading the adf files from there instead of a third-party website which could be causing my problem.

I've also tried "middle-compatibility" settings (with unzipped adf files) and game still crashed.

In the meantime, I'm going to download Pinball Illusions from EAB file server and fingers crossed, shouldn't have any problem.

Update:

I've downloaded v1.5 from EAB file server. This time around, the intro played but the music was corrupted and then the game crashed. I altered a couple of settings;

Quickstart > Best compatibility
Quickstart > Emulated hardware - configuration: 4MB fast RAM expanded onfiguration*
Chipset > Options: Cycle-exact ticked

*Game crashed with Basic non-expanded configuration (received software error). This is something else I've never had to adjust with PI.

PI now fully working.

Hmm. PI is working but when in multi-ball mode, the ball images are corrupted - like scan-lines. I've done a search of EAB and noticed this has come up a couple of times. One suggestion was to untick "cycle exact" but made no difference.

Anyone know if this problem was fixed? Or just one of those things? The same issue was mentioned in this topic but remains unresolved.

It is normal, that happens when showing interlaced display modes on non-interlaced screen. (It is not emulation specific, real Amiga + scandoubler + interlaced mode = same artifacts)

"Remove interlace artifacts" option (display panel) may help but it is only 100% compatible with WB modes. Games commonly use all kinds of tricks.

There is no solution that works with all programs. It is impossible.
