No, if you are installing original 2.05 or 3.1 Amiga OS with 1MB you can run a basic Workbench install.

As anything in computing, with more memory and a faster processor you'll benefit of a better experience and can run more apps and utils at the same time.

And welcome to EAB sanDAe!

There are 3:

A601 1Mbyte Chip RAM Trapdoor expansion (~€30, there are lots of clones)
NedoPC 8Mbyte Fast RAM expansion ($45)
PCMCIA SRAM (1, 2 & 4Mbytes ~€30 for a 2Mbyte)

Non require a fan. The NedoPC one requires you disassemble the A600 but the other two just plug in.

With an A600 with only 1Mbyte you are going to struggle.

Do you have a hard drive?

If not, which workbench disks do you have?

Do you have a NULL modem (serial) cable?

The easiest way of getting files from your PC onto your Amiga is with a PCMCIA->CF adapter and a CF card.

However you will first need to get the CF drivers onto your Amiga's hard drive, unpacked and installed. You could do that with 720Kbyte DOS formatted disks and CROSSDOS (which is built into WB3.1).

In Windows you'll need to use the CMD window to format to 720KBytes

format a: /t:80 /n:9

No, not a special one (at least, not especially special), just a small one.

I thought they could use 4MB.

I think that card will work if it physically fits. Some laptop memory cards are NOT PCMCIA even though they are the same shape and size. The easiest way to tell is look at the pins. If they are inline it will probably work. If they are staggered it will not fit.

You will need to first install the CFD driver and also FAT95 FS.

For most things.

With the FAT95 FS installed on your Amiga you'll be able to use FAT or FAT32 formatted cards directly from Windows

The only thing worth getting for a 1MB A600 is Magic Workbench.

You'll never run Miami on a 1MB A600. You do need MUI for Miami or one of the other GUI's. The GadTools GUI is smaller but you will still never get it to work on a 1MByte A600. With 2MB you can just about get the GadTools GUI to work with MUI. Forget about networking an A600 until you get a RAM upgrade.

Yes you do need to register. No it is not free.

http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/MagicWB21p

HOWEVER it will work after 14 days if you do not pay, but I advise that you support your Amiga community.
