Questions

Hi

I had an Amiga 500 back in 1989 (I think) and enjoyed it very much and now would like to get back in to playing these old games again like "Captive", etc.

What I would like to ask is if it is better to go out and buy an Amiga or use an emulator for my system? Pro/Con

TY in advance

Well the 2 obvious pros with Emulation are cost and hassle. The only benefit of the real thing is the 'feeling' which is both subjective and intangible.

For me only the real thing makes me happy

First, welcome to EAB.
...I had an Amiga in 89 (I kept it for 3 or 4 years), but I don't consider myself an old gamer yet, even if some of my views about retro-gaming are indeed a bit dated .

Second, there are many Captive fans out there, feel free to browse the other sections for advice and insights to play this famous SciFi RPG game.

Third, I choose emulation and will stick to it. For me the real thing would be to build an arcade cabinet, not owning one of these dreaded, monolithic A500s again.

I simply couldn't upgrade my computer without feeling guilty for wasting my time unwisely with annoyances, when I have never ever been deceived when upgrading one of my PCs and pushing it to its limits.

Finally, you would have to pull out quite a fair amount of money to experiment the joys of AmigaOS (and WHDload) on a real Amiga (beefed-up A1200s, and the likes).

You can use real Amiga joysticks with the real hardware (you can also do that with an adapter for your PC, but it's more hassle). A PPC can't be emulated (that's a 'beefed up' processor for some later games). Other than that it's like NovaCoder said I would start with emulation for sure

emulation vs the real thing is a very subjective question. it really depends on the person. but since emulation will cost you nothing but just some time, give it a try. if you still feel like having the real thing before you then go for it. A500 cost not much these days, but dealing with floppies again will drive you nuts very quickly. you could opt for a a1200 + whdload system which will satisfy you in every way possible but it will cost some money (around 100 Euro maybe)

There are plenty of threads on this very subject if you do a search; this one for starters. A popular subject, this one...

Thank you for all of your information on this subject and I'll start getting in to it very soon.

"Old Man" was chosen as I am almost 50, so I'm feeling my age these days or maybe not.

Welcome on the board Old Man!

Well, oldness is not a matter of years, it's a matter of state of mind...keep it positive

(...easy to say when you're 26 obviously, lol)

Just to add my two penneth - Emulation is the way to go until you are sure that you want to carry on with a real miggy!! That's how I got back into the Amiga scene after a good few years of them being put away into storage. I've been having constant fun since

As for the 'old man' some of us are older - but none the wiser for it

Slow as hell, and barely upgradeable, you get the picture...
I knew you would react to that one, since you own one, AFAIK .

@Old Man : Good luck, and plz keep us posted about your progress.

Not gonna to comment on the 'since you own one, AFAIK ' part, but instead recommend that Deleauvive looks up the words 'dreaded' and 'monolithic' in his dictionary
Hope you liked the show Nostalgeek

These two words fit in quite fine, but, as it is often the case with isolated adjectives, they could benefit from a bit of disambiguation.

Here are the intended meanings :
  • Dreaded : (not so common one, I must admit) To hold in awe or reverence
  • Monolithic : Consisting of one piece (would have been a negative comment if I added "piece of junk" to it, but I was simply referring to the desktop case, incidentally pointing out the lack of extension slots)
