Archon I ADF image of original disk
Hi,
Can someone upload a disk image (ADF) of an original, unmodified Archon disk to The Zone? There is copy-protection on track 0 side 1 of the original, so that track needs to be skipped if creating a plain ADF file. I have an Archon original disk. However, at some point in its life my disk has been written to. (The previous owner must have opened its icon in Workbench 1.x, which caused a ".info" file to be written.) On the disk (but partially overwritten) is an Amiga utility for reading/writing files in the "minidos" filesystem that the early EA games used. I have managed to recover all but the first sector of this program from my disk. The initial missing sector must have been overwritten by the .info file. Alternatively, just block 869 should be enough for me to reconstruct the file (that corresponds to the 512 bytes at offset $6CA00 in the ADF file). -- M Last edited by mark_k; 14 February 2008 at 00:43. |

mark_k, of course it's ok to ask for ADF files but please don't ask for people to upload SPS images on EAB.
It's worth reading the "SPS (formerly CAPS) FAQ - DO'S & DONT'S" section so that you know where EAB stands regarding these type of files... |

Okay, I've edited the post to reflect that.

Wtf is the point of preserving these things if they can't be obtained by the people who need them? |

As Retro has mentioned, you can easily obtain them from the web, P2P clients or Torrent sites. Feel free to do so, that's your business, just don't post links here... Your question is really one for the SPS team, if you want an explanation then e-mail them if you like. |

Simple: this board is the only one where we have a community.
It's about helping, sharing information etc. We don't want any trouble for either us or yourselves that could jeopardize the project or the board. There is nothing stopping you to use other channels if you are strictly interested in the images only. |

As for Archon: the Archon Collection versions of the games work properly with KS1.3.

Looking at the game code, it uses AllocAbs() to allocate memory at an absolute address. So Toni's comment about disabling/disconnecting extra floppy drives applies. I managed to recover the MiniDos Utilities program! I'll upload it to the Zone tomorrow. On that subject... is there any better disk-recovery program than DiskSalv? DiskSalv wasn't able to recover that file, so I had to do it by hand. Is there any utility that can recover orphaned file fragments from OFS disks? (That is, where the file header block no longer exists.) -- M |

The games are the same and they do run properly with an A500 KS1.3 512KB chipram only.
A1000 may or may not work, never tried. Does it really have 512KB? Also, just like Toni said, you may have an external drive attached. |

Or maybe something else requiring chipram buffers. Harddrive?
