CD32 FMV tracks

Recently I got FMV for CD32 and off course that I started to play with it. I have tried to make mpeg-1 video track that can be played on CD32 with FMV add-on using cdmpeg program/viewer. I don't mean normal video cd but something as intro movie on Cannon Fodder.
I tried to burn mpeg file encoded according to vcd standard as track but the end result was only black screen.
Does anybody know how to burn such track, or maybe give me some suggestion what could I try?

Thanks in advance

Cheers cane

I am just reviewing the FMV device on amiga.resource.cx

would you know if the FMV device reads directly from the custom Optical ROM or could a data stream be directed there, say from an IDE device like an optical drive or hard disk ?

In order to play an MPEG stream you use cd32mpeg.device, which is in the FMV cartridge ROM. According to the autodoc, it might only be able to play from a CD track, read using cd.device. However, it might also be able to play raw MPEG data (you could write a program to read from an MPEG file and send it that data).

On the Amiga Developer CD (v1.2, probably v1.1 and v2.1 also) there is some CD32 developer stuff, including a command-line MPEG player. You can run that to play an MPEG track.

I'll upload an archive of CD32 stuff to The Zone shortly.

@Dizzy

I'm not trying to make normal VCD, I'm trying to make normal CD32 disc with mpeg tracks. Example for that are Cannon Fodder and Demo Disc 2.0.

@Zetr0 & mark_k

I used that CLI mpeg player from Amiga Developer CD - cdmpeg. And there is also on CD source code in C for it, but to change anything is beyond my humble knowledge .

On dev CD there is also some burning software that can burn mpeg video tracks. But it only works with one model of Phillips SCSI burner from '94.

I'll try to experiment a little bit more, maybe I'll get some results.

I have also a FMV-card and tried this before but without any results. I used the programs ViCaDo http://www.netzgesta.de/projects and MakeCD, but the programm told me that the Video-Clips have not the right format. But now I have OS4 for ClassicPPC and I can convert Video-clips very fast via ffmpeg. I think I will try it out again next weekend.
BTW I have created a PhotoCD with the program PhotoAlbum(same author) in CDi Video-format. The CD works good in DVD-player but in the CD32 with FMV-card I see the start-picture only and can`t navigate to the next album/picture. Maybe I found out where the problem comes from ...

perhaps you should read some script files from say magazine disks that play media via the FMV unit? i.e. perhaps playing a file as opposed to a custom track is a good compromise? perhaps even the only way if you're lucky they'll have special written executables that target the FMV directly... check out the media plus the syntax...

attach an sx1 or something suitable?

I have 2 FMVs and 2 SX1s but haven't bothered to follow this route...

I remember the very early 90s that this was how I was going to bet the FPS limitations of Amiga hardware... generate widescreen mpeg movies from Imagine at 25 fps and record them via FMV unit on CD32 out the svhs output...

ah the days of knowing what you want to do but it doesn't quite come together... heh

hmmm... let me put one of my CDIs in the cdrom and see if there is anything on the disk? let me see... undiscovered country maybe

3 dirs and 3 files... no executables however...

2 dirs can't be accessed without read/write errors...

ended up being disk one of the untouchables instead of startrek... sorry I'm no help

I tried with custom track because I managed only to find cdmpeg viewer (from dev CD) that reads only tracks. Playing a mpeg from file would be even better for me, but I don't have player for that.
Do you maybe remember which magazine/or any other CD had mpeg FMV videos? The only CDs I know that have mpeg video are Cannon Fodder and Demo Disc.

That's it, I think!

I seem to remember reading at the time that some Philips CDI titles would play on the FMV cartridge (not video CDs, I mean proprietary Philips format titles). Never got round to trying any, though.

Short update:
I found on aminet vpeg hardware mpeg player that's made for Peggy+ and CD32 FMV module. I tired to run it but I get "Program failed (error #80000005) Wait for disk activiy to finish." error.
No progress yet on this subject ...
