Magazine coverdisks?

Is there any interested in converting coverdisks?

I have lots, and most are going to be DOS so should be easy to convert? or at least easy to tell if they are unmodified?

I agree! If Amiga disks are really going to die due to bitrot, then SPS should be obtaining dumps of all coverdisks ASAP!

I would guess about 95% of disks would be normal AmigaDos format so that is a tonne of disks that could be preserved without any extra formats being required! How about it SPS lads?

There have been talks of this and we said we would, but haven't received any dumps afterwards.

Still, real games have priority, but yes coverdisks are fine.

Well surely there must be some kind of way of employing someone else to help?

It's really quite annoying having such a great project have such a poor turn around in having information supplied to us.

If you are so keen on having people contribute then maybe someone could help advertise the fact. It has been seemingly dead for a while now. Yes there were more files released but there wasn't even a news item about it.

Well it's easier for us lot to preserve the CDs. The floppy's actually have copy protection, CD32/CDTV/AmigaCD games never did.

The TOSEC CD project creates awesome copiess, with 100% WAV files from the audio.

Quick stats, games released last year: 2601-2766

That is 166 games, many of them are on multiple disks.
It's about one game per every second day.

It'd really like to see a project with more. Especially from such a small active community that is not mainstream.

Yes, this is not comparable to 400 games in a few weeks during the first year but those times are over; loads of things that we need now are uncommon - if they weren't they'd have been preserved already.

If the community started an effort to find and dump all undumped games (like the arcade community does, like snes community does, like mgd collectors do etc) we could release the rest. This however is not something that is achievable without support.

Yeah plenty of people who want everything, but aren't prepared to contribute in any way.

The SPS team does a fine job and most of us appreciate the effort you guys put in.

I know SPS has done a hell of a lot and I consider SPS and WHDLoad two of the best Amiga projects going. I've contributed a lot to SPS over the years and I'm very grateful to everyone else who has too, as without them the project would be dead.

I was just suggesting that maybe someone could be employed (not as in paid) to at least update the news page and update the xml files on the site? I'm not expecting a news item every couple of days but there was quite a release recently but we were never told about it.

Also, is there anyway of knowing which games have had successful dumps but have unsupported disk formats? That'd help us narrow down which games still need dumping.

I wasn't having a go at you KG - you do plenty for the Amiga community (much more than most), but rather replying to IFWs post.

Just wanted to make sure there was no bad feeling

anyway... this was about coverdisks... hopefully AMR will now let us whittle out which disks are actually protected so we can go about getting them submitted to SPS sooner rather than later.

I hope someone still has coverdisks from The One like Cannon Fodder, Uridium 2 and Trex Warrior as they really need to be preserved!

And let's not forget AP13's Sensible disk....

Guys, is there some list which says:
1. Everything that has already been dumped (SPS has games, nothing for coverdisks on SPS?)
2. Things that have not been dumped, but already have the disks waiting to be dumped (tho dumping all disks may find different versions)
3. Things which are known to be missing (could be obtained from points 1 and 2 above, but a list would give indication of completeness even tho u can never be sure of all u r missing, and can help with searching)

I know that someone would need to spend the time to maintain the above.

And as for dumping coverdisks, what program should we use? (I know that SPS has a specific tool, but if it is not protected, do we still use that tool for ultimate accuracy and consistency?)

Atomix from the One was already submitted to SPS a while back - I think it was the same as retail version.
