Got an Chinon FB-357
I got the hand on a Chinon FB-357 not 357A.
Can this drive be modifyed to work as an Amiga HD drive. Right now its set as an DS0 drive. Tryed it in my Amiga 1200 and the Diskchange dosen't work. Im able to format a floppy as 880kb. If you know something, let me know. |

The harsh reality is that Alexh assumed you knew that it does not matter. His reply was correct. Whether it's an FB or FZ is of no consequence. The drive will never work as HD. It will always be either 880k Amiga or 720k IBM PC.
If you want to purchase an FB-357A, or FZ-357A, ask me. |

Okey,
The hard thing is that i only have jumper for DS0 and DS1 setting. So there are no jumpers for MM, RDY and TTL/C-MOS So my FB-357 drive is NOT exactly the same as FZ-357. |

You could try opening and having a look inside, I remember having to do this donkeys years ago as there were no external jumpers on a drive I was fitting (on a PC). YHMV of course, but for a few mins work it might be productive.

I know this is an old thread; I just stumbled upon it because I just managed to fix a non-working FB-357 and read and execute files on a PC from it.
What amiga4k wrote is not entirely correct; I configured the drive as a HD/1.44MB drive, and it read the disk without any problems. But what he meant might have been "on an Amiga", of course. Next step will be to test it on an Amiga, which is the reason I wanted to salvage the drive. I've had it lying around for ages from my company, and it was among those discredited as being broken - but when I started working with my Amiga again, I realised it would be a good idea to try and fix the old Chinon drives; they might come in handy some day. :-D And it turned out to be just a sh**load of dust and junk at the stepper motor shaft - after a good clean and some grease on the shaft, it works flawlessly! :-D :-D Last edited by brufnus; 24 August 2021 at 13:57. |
