Apollo 1240
Lo all just been given an Apollo 1240.
I stuck it in my miggy 1200 - result nadda - HD spun up and no more. Took it out examined it.... NO OSCILLATOR!! Holy Crap have I fried the board? |

Is it any easy job to put one on? AmigaKit have 50mhz ones for 3.99 - deal or no deal? |

well it's only 4quid. and the 040 should run at 25mhz with a 50mhz oscillator.. (If I remember rightly)

Only one way to find out isn't there
I presume it is only 3 or 4 pins so unless the holes on the apollo are blocked up should be easy enuff! |

I have exactly that card. And it's a fairly easy job with a steady hand, a magnifying glass and a few blobs of solder. Use a fine point on the soldering iron(put a touch of solder on the iron first and then dab it onto the connections).

there's always the possibility, but mine fell off and I soldereed it back on, this was after firing up the A1200(which didn;t boot) and then discovering the capacitor on the table.
So you've got a decent chance. For the sake of 1/2 an hour of your time and £3.99 for an accelerated miggy...I'd go for it m8! |

14-pin crystals are rectangular and 8-pin are square.
As you can see from this photo. http://amiga.resource.cx/photos/phot...ile=Apollo1240 The A1240 has a rectangular 14-pin type. Remember, get the orientation of the crystal correct, put it in the wrong way round and bang, you'll need another. I'd consider getting a 66MHz crystal at the same time as your 50MHz one if you want to perhaps overclock to 33MHz? |

The important bit to remember is, that the solder will not stick to the component unless it is heated. Thus it is best to heat it first, then apply solder so that it goes directly into the right place (ie. where there's hot metal). |

X Mhz Osc. = X/2 Mhz 68040...
for ex: 50 Mhz Osc. = 50/2=25 Mhz 68040 ... get a 66 Mhz one, it will work 90% .... remember to put a heatsing/fan on the 040! |

Thats one thing I'd never considered... o/c the crystal/CPU.... I know the Amiga can be a bit funny with timings and is very much knitted together pretty well. I haven't had the chance to get to my Amiga as yet as the wife has just had our first born, so things are pretty hectic. If I can, I'll try and dig it out sometime today and post up a picture of mine so you can get a good idea of where the bits should go and the orientation. Would that help ?
