Battery of the expansion memory set of the A500
Hello guys.
Im trying to put my old AMIGA 500 working again. I have a question. I was almost sure that it had 1mb of ram. But when I turned it on and loaded workbench it showed just 380kb of free ram. I think it can be some expansion memory card problem. So... I opened the computer and found the expansion set, there was a key to switch it on apparently, I turned it on, but then noticed that there is a BATTERY missing in the expansion set. Can anyone tell me what kind of battery it is? and what is its VOLTAGE?? should the expansion memory set work without the battery?? |

The battery will be for the inbuilt clock, and so shouldn't affect the RAM. Have you tried removing the card and running Workbench again to see how much RAM is free
Maybe the problem could be as simple as a bad connection for the expansion card, esp if it has been say gathering dust for years? |

Well, I have a battery of an A-500 ramexpansion here, but it's not a 512kB expansion but a bigger, 4.5MB expansion. So I don't know if batteries are the same, but it is one of these blue, zylinder like batteries that are soldered into the board. ( I have also seen expansions with flat, round, non-rechargable batteries )
It has 3.6V and 60mAH. Maybe the switch doesn't work correctly on your expansion ? Also carefully inspect the area around there where the battery should be: A leaking battery can kill some traces of the board ! That's why I desoldered the battery of my expansionboard. Also some expanionboard have some jumper which switches them on & off. |

The expansion card seems to be in good shape.
the socket of battery is for a coin like battery. it is written rayovac 2325 near the socket. I tried to plug in and out the board many times, but got no results. there is also a on/off key on the board. |

Ok, I suppose you tried to switch the on/off key in both positions ( only when the Amiga is turned off ! ) and both times you only got 512KB internal memory, right ? ( that would have been too easy )
Rayovac 2325 doesn't tell me anything, but I found out it's a 3V battery and should only cost about a dollar or two. ( just serach for Rayovac in google or something ) Ask a nearby electronics dealer and he should have it. If you cannot find exactly this battery then you could also try a CR 2032, CR 2025 or CR 2016. These are also coin like and also have 3V and differ in height, but one of them may fit in your expansion, too. Nevertheless I suppose the battery is only for the real time watch and the memory should work without it ( like mentioned already ), but who knows.... |

Ok im gonna buy one of that.
I hope it works. I want to transfer files from PC to AMIGA and I suppose it should become very hard with just 512kb ram |

Yeah, but it's as hard with 1 meg. If you have no HD, you would be cool if you had 2MB of RAM.
