Problem with newer WinUAE

Hi,

i just decided to upgrade from pre V1 winuae to the newer versions, but after updating the new winuae does not run.

I double click the icon, the box comes up but shuts down immediately.

i have tried 1000 and 1100, both do the same, so i have gone back to the latest pre V1 (992) and it works again fine.

any idea's ?

Hi whiteb,

when the box was already visible for a while, then WinUAE should have
written a file named "winuaebootlog.txt" in its installation directory.
Have a look into that, maybe you can see there what's going wrong.
If not, send this file together with your config-file "Default.uae" from
the configurations subdirectory.

As a second step, you can rename the "configurations" directory
and then try to load WinUAE 1.1 again. If this fails, please send also the
new "winuaebootlog.txt" and a description of your OS and the hardware.

is it going to make a difference to the log, given that i have gone back to version .9 since ?

Also, given that Winuae does work properly, with the older version ?

Try unzipping the latest version to a fresh directory. Move a suitable kick.rom over there and try running a game from an .adf image, using the default settings. If this works, then you know there's something wrong with your WinUAE configuration that causes a conflict with the new version. If it still doesn't work, then it must be something with your (video) drivers or OS.

I've been installing new WinUAE versions on top of older ones for ages and I don't recall having any problems. But then I only use it to emulate a vanilla A500 with no harddrives.

Maybe Toni could help you.

Could you be more specific? What you mean by "the box"?

Attach (or email) your winuaebootlog.txt too, thanks.

Of course, that makes a difference ! What we need is a log-file, which
has been generated by WinUAE 1.1, because we want to know what the
conflicts between WinUAE 1.1 and your OS drivers and your config are
and not why WinUAE 0.9.9.x is running so perfectly on your system

Or, do you get any problems when you try out my suggestions ? Usually,
it should be possible to check these two steps in less than five minutes.

Please, post your winuaebootlog.txt and configurations/Default.uae.

Thanks

Okay, i installed 1100 to a brand new directory, not my older directory, and its running, so its some sort of clash there.

okay, I'll move across the ROM's and stuff one at a time and see how i go.

the winuae window, you can see the window being brought up, but then vanishes again.

We shall see how I go with V1100 in a totally new directory of its own.

okay, the problem is.....

Run winuae, (from icon on desktop or from directory), winuae loads as it should, I select a game to load (in this case its Parasol stars, IPF), the config used is Host\fullscreen (640x480).uae which came with the latest version.

I click start, and the winuae box flickers black a couple of times, like its trying to initialise the system, at which point Winuae just dissapears (closes).

It does this with all configs I try.
Attached Files
File Type: txt winuaebootlog.txt (9.7 KB, 229 views)
File Type: uae Fullscreen (640x480).uae (989 Bytes, 194 views)

Do you have DX9.0c installed? The latest chipset/video/audio drivers installed? Service Pack 2?

Try deleting your configurations/default.uae (backup it first). There seems to be some weird filesystem config entries which may cause problems (they shouldn't but..)

Hi whiteb,

if I understand it correctly what you said, then you can start WinUAE 1.1
from your new directory, you get the GUI and you can even run the
emulation with booting the Kickstart and loading the Workbench. Or not ?

Your only problem is just to load this game (Parasol stars, IPF) with
your old config file "Host\fullscreen (640x480).uae". Correct ??

Maybe it helps, if you try to generate a brandnew config file for this game.
Unfortunately, I hate playing games and cannot help you very much here.

But, when you choose the configuration settings for your game manually
you could also enable the creation of "winuaelog.txt" under "Misc".

This can give us some more info, in case WinUAE crashes after the start.

Service pack 2 ? Wash your mouth out with soap.
DirectX = Directx 9.0c (4.09.000.0904)

Service pack 1 with all patches applied is 1 million % better than service pack 2.

nope, as soon as it leaves options when click start, it closes.

Nope, Version 1100 or 1000 will not boot at all, workbench or game (adf or IPF)

I included this earlier.

At least I wasnt lying.

if you can convince me why i need SP2, over what i already have with SP1, uptodate patches, Virus scanner, Adaware and Firefox, then i will consider upgrading.

The wife has found that *MOST* of her important software, that was paid for and purchased for work, just does not run with SP2, I think it lasted around 5 minutes when i previously tried, and there are no more updates to said software.

Hi whiteb,

THX for clearing up some facts of what's possible on your system or not.

But there are 2 different logs: "winuaebootlog.txt" & "winuaelog.txt".
So far we got only the first one from you. To generate the second log
you have to select the "Misc" panel in the settings and then enable the
"Logging" there, as you can see on the jpg image in the attachment.
The "winuaelog.txt" is created from that moment on when you start
the emulation. With a little luck it will tell us why WinUAE crashes. OK?
