The Joys of Pcmcia ethernet cards
Hello there. A simple question, ive bought a 3com ethernet card for my a600 and i was wondering what i can do with the card except use it in conjunction with amiga explorer and attempt to browse the t'internet slowly? Oh and AmIRC.
Thanks in advance |

Your card works right already? Why "browse the internet slowly"?
Set up Samba or SMBFS for filesharing and transfering. Get a VNC client for your Amig )or was it a server? whatever) for remote controlling (handy) |

Stock Amiga 600 (that means no processor upgrade or fastram) will not be a good internet browser. Amiga Explorer is a filesharing tool. An yes all will be slow.
I do not think a VNC server or client is usable on a 7Mhz 68k. An ethernet card can be used to communicate via a network. Since you mentioned you are already doing that I think you exploited your A600 to the full unless you get an 630 upgrade. |

I tried to make AE to work with a 3Com card but it is a bitch. I am still trying to make it work. I tried with Genesis but I will also try with Miami. I used to be a Miami boy but I then installed OS3.5 and started to use Genesis. If I make this to work with TCP/IP it will rock. At the moment, I have set up networking and I can share files and network resources, but I love that drag'n'drop option of HDFs from the Amiga to PC....

I am using AE with genesis and a 3com pcmcia card just fine... you must remember too have the __same passwords__ on the amiga and pc...
I have set the amiga's IP to 192.168.0.2 , and the localhost to Amiga, and the pc is set to 192.168.0.1 ... and it works great |

If I continue to have problems, I will send you a PM or even better, we can arrange a meeting during Easter time.

Have you disabled your firewall on your ethernet card on the PC end? Have you activated DHCP or created a static IP? Have you switched AE to TCP mode from Serial mode? Those are the usual problems when using AE.

Why did you install Windows?
Why did you post that reply? Why did I post this reply? Why? 42? EDIT: This was meant to be as useless reply as previous one. Ignore both and be happy or something Last edited by Toni Wilen; 15 March 2005 at 14:35. |

More importantly does it work now you've switched off the firewall?

Depends if you have two ethernet ports (most modern computers do), or a USB modem. Me I have a USB modem so I can switch the firewall off on my Ethernet card and remain protected.

BTW, I failed to say that I have a proper firewall already installed but Windoze activated its own firewall too so it was messing with the other one. Not sure how it got activated again...
