A500 PSU not working

I bought a psu of ebay and it doesnt work.

When connected and plugged in the lights turn on, on the miggy and the tv changes from grey static to a black screen (not the usual disk insert screen). The floppies arent making their usual noise.Why is this? The psu is making a rattling and a humming sound.

The Amiga PSU outputs not one, but several different voltages. It would seem your 5V line is working else you wouldn't get the lights working on the Mig. Either the 12V line is down or the -12V line is down, or both. It's also possible that the 5V line (and any of the others) could be a bit "wayward" - either high or low.

Disconnect the PSU, don't use it, and get a qualified electronic engineer to take a look at it - it's probably quite easy to fix. Another idea is whilst you're chatting to the engineer, ask him about getting a PC PSU and modifying for the Mig. It's easy to do, and the spare lead you have with that duff PSU would come in handy as the cable to the Mig has that nice little square plug at the end - and it's a real bugger to get hold of one of them spare.

I got it working! It wasnt the psu afterall! When i had opened it ages ago, I had put the keyboard cable in backwards.!

No wonder it didnt work!
