Amiga-inspired Coldfire machine
No chit chat here on this? I'm surprised...
I'm gobsmacked that he could have produced all this... would that he could have taken over some of Mick Tinker's earlier work like the PCI Amiga "Inside Out" or the 5.25 Bay Amiga "Access" or even Boxer. Would that he had done a Coldfire A1200 Motherboard (for Desktop A1200s) which would have also been expandable in a tower... Somehow keeping Classic compatibility but with some extra goodies seems the way for me.... |

Hm, heard about some Coldfire projects in the past, but never seen any real development.
Also hear Atari people have similar projects going, but it's going slow there as well it seems. Still, if this guy can have something out by next quarter, I suppose it would be interesting to see. |

Yes, but this Coldfire actually seems to be happening whereas Oli is no FT on it and its when he can get time.,.. not as likely to arrive this year or next as the Nueron machine

check out:
www.cdtv.org.uk/coldfire/ or Amigacoldfire@yahoogroups.com Oliver Hannaford-Day or 'Oli' is the guy responsible for the Coldfire's existance in any form at all. He is designing, building and prototyping the whole thing! and he beat me to buying a promethius expansion on ebay ![]() ![]() http://www.austexsoftware.com/nueron1200p.html While very admarable, and definately a worthwhile project, cannot be compared to the Coldfire board, as it does not run AmigaOS of any flavour, but was inspired by, and imitates it. The Coldfire is an accelerator and expansion system for (potentialy) all Amigas, starting with the A4000 and A3000, as these provide the easiest solutions. Frankly if you've got and A4K or A3K, you'd be mad not to get one... faster than PPC ever will be, PCI slots, PS2 mouse/kbd, USB, AC97 audio.... the list goes on! |

Coldfire is NOT an accelerator it is a CPU.
Oli is designing a Coldfire Accelerator and it is not projected to have PCI slots. As to the state of play, well the Austex effort looks a darn sight more likely to arrive in some form. For my liking they should have gone the whole hog and popped AGA in there in the mix, made it an AGA Coldfire Amiga with expansions and PS2 ports. Oli is starting with A3/4000 CPU card but its NOT in a working proto yet IIRC and the Austex Nueron IS booting an OS. They are far further down the line. However, who is gonna wanna write for it? Thats where they needed to keep (or get) some Classic Amiga compatibility. |

The Northbridge that Oli is using has a PCI interface, therefore the card has PCI interconnects..... implementation shouldn't be too hard... Prototype spec: For A4000 150Mhz V4 Coldfire (The V4 at 162Mhz gives 233 MIPS) USB 1.1 Firewire 400mbps AC97 audio - don't see those on an accelerator and you get 168 pin SDRam slot as well. Ok, so maybe no PS2 ports ![]() |

Dont play silly semantics here:
It plugs into the CPU slot and it makes the machine faster ERGO an accelerator. I never said the Nueron was an Amiga of any sort. I said if he put AGA (and obviously a couple of other bits) he could have made it run AmigaOS of some sort. Just cos you're sold on Oli's Accelerator don't dis what is an incredible piece of kit. |

Let me put it simply...
Coldfire is a CPU.. its a TM of Motorola What you mean is "OHD's Coldfire Accelerator and Expansion" (cos he doesnt have a name for the card).. to say Coldfire is an Accelerator and Expansion is BS. Now.. there... you made be a pedant.... happy? |

So yes, OHD does indeed call it an accelerator, who's codename is ColdFusion; however with the extra features included on the prototype, I'd say It's an expansion, if ever there was one... since it expands the h/w capabilitys of the std Amiga enormously. |

Read your own post.. you're getting confused between Coldfire (a Motorola CPU) and Coldfusion (OHD's name for his accelerator/expansion)...
