Wing Commander 2

Just a small teaser of what I'm working on:

[ Show youtube player ]

This is my first-ever attempt of coding on the Amiga, and it's just for fun. Will most likely never see a release, but I thought I show it anyway.

It's based on the WC2 source code I got one and a half years ago.

Looks great!
Maybe you can improve keyboard control? I see on movie and remember from DOS unable to diagonal movement. Right/left or up/down at once, but on mouse is no problem.

Wing Commander 2 on AMIGA !!!!!!!! GREAT !!!!!!

Wing commander is one of my favorite games of all times. I always regreted to not play the wingo commander 2 episode (I never have been a pc guy).

I really want a release of this game on amiga; And I would be happy to donate for it with my humble means.

That would be bad thing if You don't release this game!
Please finish it or if not, please give sources someone who finish it.
Also, please add CD32 joypad support.

First, as for "support this/that" wishes: as I said, this is my first-ever attempt to do anything on the Amiga. I don't have the knowledge yet to e.g. add CD32 joypad support. I will certainly try to get mouse support added, as well as sound. Also, I need to rewrite the way the game handles memory.

Issue with a release is that it will take many months to get it in a somehow usable state. But the even bigger issue is the source code situation. The wc2 source code has not been leaked. I can not make it available or any work derived from it. If I did, the next thing in my postbox would be a "friendly" letter from EA...

But we will see. I will certainly post updates whenever I make progress.

Hi, what we currently see is running on which type of A1200 ? which CPU are you running this premise on ?

No, that's running in WinUAE with a fast 030 config. Otherwise, I would have had no way to do a video capture (using WinUAE's video output option).

I have yet to test it on real hardware. It's AGA-only for now, so I need to get one of my A1200 systems set up - which I have to do very soon anyway, as I get a TF1260 in a few days.

Very good. It's faster than what we got for Wing Commander I on CD32 in 256 colors...

Speed in WinUAE can be misleading. I assume it will be slower on real hardware.

I'll see how far I need to push the TF1260 to make it smooth.

True, the official AGA release was not very fast/good;
BUT
the WC Patch by CdBS (http://de3.aminet.net/game/patch/WCPatch.readme) made it super fast

Its even too fast on a 68030/50; thats why there are speed settings.

The Wing Commander AGA WHDload slave uses the same patch and is highly recommended. (thanks to Psygore)

Here is the latest version of that (was not released yet)
Greetings

The patch just change the speed but the AGA version was good. It just needed more than stock hardware to be smooth enough.

Hi sokolovic.

They crearly did more that "just changing the speed" .
Here a little part of the Guide that comes with it:

WCPatch is designed to fix some bugs in order to make
Wing Commander CD³² work on a simple Amiga (without the Akiko chip).

In fact
Nick Pelling, the guy who translated the game on Amiga, already did that but in a so fucking manner that we re-made it.
The result is that !

First, the game works without Akiko and with FastRAM, before the
patch, Nick Pelling was used to blit in a buffer which allocation he didn't
force to ChipRAM. the second error was a sharp, he forgot in his source,
destroying the palette.

And second, we replaced its C2P with our brand new one, resulting in
an acceleration about ×1.5 to ×5, depending on your CPU.

Quote end:

You see; they did way more that "just changing the Speed".

The CP2 Routine was made by MORB and i am so he did this.

I can clearly remember playing a version of Wing Commander AGA
on my A1200 Blizzard 68030/50 back then, which did run C2P stuff super smooth, but WC was so sloooow.

Then i discovered the WCPatch by the CdBS Guys and it was just such a revelation

I love Wing Commander and the AGA Version would be my personal favorite of Part 1.

The Music alone makes it my favorite; The Kilrathy Saga version comming second to that.

Wing Commander 2 would be so sweet to have on the Amiga, but i was always thinking;
why not getting the Secret Missions on the Amiga ?

The Engine is the same as the Main game. I even think WC2´s engine is not that much differend from Part 1 either.

Mouse support done. Now I have to get sound working, as it is not that much fun otherwise.
