Scanning Holograms

This will apply to HOL also!

Right...

What is the best way of scanning a hologram?

I received my Robocop 3 today (Complete with the Defender Dongle ) and it has a hologram in the box..

I have never tried this before, so I am just guessing here...

It is probably better to take a (digital) photo of the hologram, since obviously it needs natural light settings in order to work. If the hologram has more than one "state" (where parts move as it is rotated) then I guess a few photos would be needed to encapsulate the effect.

If anybody has any ideas on this, I would certainly be interested in hearing them!

Thinking about it, an analogue camera is possibly better quality anyway, is this an option?

So... anyway... anybody know how to simulate holograms in VRML?

The problem isn't taking the pic (I have a digital camera here) the problem is the poor hologram

I'm serious with the video idea, if you can do it properly of course. These things are supposed to be perceived in motion. Or shoot photos of it from different angles and fade them into each other with after effects. If you can't take photos of it or scan it you have to take a video in proper lighting.

As long as we're discussing methods for preserving game materials that are a bit outside the norm, anybody have any bright ideas for how you can go about properly scanning and preserving the "scratch and sniff" card that was included in Infocom's "Leather Goddesses of Phobos"? I don't think a video is going to do that one justice.

Chuckles: Especially as they probably do not smell any longer.
Mad-Matt: I have one of those. Interestingly, it does smell a bit.
