Digital Candy BBS

Hey folks!

Last week I dug my A4000 out of the loft and fired it up. 4Gb Seagate Barracuda SCSI disk in there wouldn't spin up but I found backup drive I had created long ago that did.

So what I have now is an almost fully functioning version of my BBS Digital Candy. All the files are there, all the doors and message bases, all the user.data and new user answerfiles. Such a blast from the past!

Early days with this retro project and a lot of tweaking to do but I filmed this quick Youtube clip this evening so you can see it all working from my Sysop side of things.

Enjoy the clip. Sorry for it just being hand held camera phone as definitely no video capture just yet!!! [ Show youtube player ]

I was a few years too young to ride the BBS wave, but that video gave me the nostalgies. The tape drive looks neat.

Yes I will share the files when I get the 4000 linked up to my PC. Figuring all this stuff out! Guess I need to get Amiga Forever and the required cables.

Just a null modem cable will do you. You can use a terminal program on each side to transfer stuff.
Also Amiga Explorer is still available as a free download if you prefer to use that. https://www.amigaforever.com/ae/

I've recovered about 7.3gig of Amiga BBS uploads so far, I'm struggling to recover some of my DAT tapes as they have been damaged, I'm using linux to recover the tapes as I have no Amiga hardware, each tape has multiple backups month by month most the damage seems to be on the first backups on the start of the tapes everything else comes off fine. I've had to learn tape commands in linux to do the extracting to a tape.bin file copy that on a pen drive to my PC and then mount the bin as a hard drive in amiback under winuae and extract them it's a miracle it works and it's actually a very quick way to do it, as to ftp them would take years

Hi, I see your bbs closed in 96, what year did it start? Also what hardware was it running on?? What conferences did you have on your bbs?

Will you be making the file listings available?? I'm looking for old h/p tools. I like the upload screens, I can't believe that people uploaded 600MB on dialup .
What speed connections did you have at the start and at the end??

Thanks

It started in October 1993, It was Amiga, Console & PC it also had a huge Am-Express section along with different group sections. Dial up speeds first started at 14,400 ended at 33,600 many users paid out of their own pockets to upload some huge amounts considering the speeds available. The rest of us used methods probably better not mentioned on here. I also had another node I put online when the wife would let me as it was the home line lol we used to telnet on that. The Internet killed the BBS it was a heartbreaking decision to close her down. But better to go on a high than keep watching the callers log shrink week by week. I have all listings etc and can make them available if some one tells me how.

For a simple file you can use "The Zone!"

Here how to do for using it

Come on man, that's crazy... 7.3GB uploaded to The Zone! as individual files

A better solution is to upload to the EAB File Server

Yes, MDR doesn't fit the criteria as yet to have an account... but given his time / effort for the Amiga community then I'm positive we can make this happen (hey Turran)

On a side note; I should really merge the thread with this one: Digital Candy BBS

...but it may get a little messy so will see what other GMs think.

You should have a section specially for old Sysops that used to run Scene BBS sites now that could get very interesting

I tried that about 10 years ago it's extremely slow and painful. I recently found a way to read my Ami-back DAT tapes on a PC using linux it's an extremely fast way of doing it, if you need any help I can give you all the Linux terminal command lines you will need.
