We NEED something like EmuTOS
In light of recent unfortunate events that we are all aware of but do need remind of, it has all been brought home to us the ridiculous premise that an aged and defunct operating system is still not allowed to be distributed.
Now... I noticed when I was researching the Atari ST emulator DCaSTaway (which has been ported to Windows also) that those who wish to emulate that have a freeware alternative to Atari TOS called EmuTOS. Is it time we in the "real" Amiga community consider such a move to free us from the deluded clutches of Cloanto, Bill McEwen and his Grandma? More importantly, would it be feasible judging by the Amiga's somewhat more complex hw than the ST's??? |

There is an AROS bounty to reverse engineer Kickstart.
BTW, how "aged" does something have to be? OS3.9 is only 5 years old. Last edited by adolescent; 26 September 2006 at 21:53. |

Didn't WinUAE already have some basic kickrom function emulation? Maybe something that can be improved further by volunteers.

TOS is a lot simpler than AmigaOS/Kickstart.
Don't forget that AmigaOS is a real multitasking OS that runs on custom hardware where TOS is basically...well... DR-GEM running on an 68000. Oh god. I sense that whole schoolyard my-A500-kicks-your-STs-butt-argument coming on |

Our only hope here is the AROS bounty. Or a superhero appearing with the job done, or partially, if functional, done.

Os3.9 wasn't on an original Amiga. It's derivative post-Commodore era crap, sorry. |

The same goes for Workbench 3.1 (not Kickstart 3.1; that was available in the CBM CD32 and thus is clearly from the Commodore era). |
