Compactflash as hdd on buddha controller

Is it possible to use Buddha flash ide controller and Cf card as bootable drive in a3000? Anyone tried that?

@Chain

in a nut shell YEPO!

the CF card (when using an ide adapter) is seen as nothing more than an ATA device. the only thing is the buddha has no DMA, (not that theres much to that on an Amiga) but this will impeed its performance.

what why? DMA is irrelevant to cf acting as HD... a1200 has no DMA on the ide port and I have seen a4000's with cf... I don't see why it won't work on buddha!

no, is not adapter issue.
buddha cant see cf BECAUSE its 2nd.scsi.device.
same problem as with CF and 4xEIDE on secondary port
it will not work at all
there is one possible solution - new firmware/flash for buddha. Im wonderind if Jens can help us with 7 years old hw/fw

Please explain why you think that 2nd.scsi.device is a problem. I have a FastATA which sees its channels as 2nd.scsi.device and 3rd.scsi.device and there is no problem booting from a device connected to either of them.

fastata works really another way than buddha (based on old alf controller)
im just guessin - cf didnt work on 4xeide on secondary port, and buddha have similar problem.

just for clear it, there isnt any problem with booting from 2nd scsi device. problem is with detecting CF here

@Chain

I have just test this on my a600.

I put my 4GB CF card onto the 2nd channel of the IDEfix97 buffered interface and the DVD/CDRW onto the 1st channel.

The A600 booted but idefixprefs complained about the ROM not being where it was expected.

I tried this also on a 1200 (with another buffered IDE interface) and got the same result.

Although I am not 100% positive I believe, as keropi suggests, that it may well be your adapter that is at fault. as you may know some adapters are not 100% ATA compliant, and since the Amiga IDE systems are old and have a very limmited inteligence cannot work arround the device inquire of these adapters.

If i could suggest anything, before commiting either the compact flash or ide adapter to the bin / trash or worse. is there another amiga you could test it on?

In fact, if you wish I do have a spare adapter that I know work as well as pre-installed OS3.5 CF card. I can send these to you to test out you buddha (as long as you send 'em back ) PM me

ive tried 4 different cards on 3 different adapters, they are working fine in A1200 onboard controller, A600 onboard etc. so i tihing they are not faulty

tried also prepared bootable Cf with system on it, i got only "insert floppy" screen. led on adapter flashes, but thats all.

amiga ide systems are maybe old, bud buddha is "relatively" new hw

btw there are fuckin 40.070 roms inside, dunno who put it here but not me, and i dont have another 3.1 set for 3000

Strange... it should work, I'll try this on my A3000 with budhha and let you know (however it might take a while, I need a CF and an adapter first).

I also got a reply from Jens Schönfeld.
quote (hope he doesnt mind):

I have a few customers who are using the
Transcend IDE flash modules, which are basically
CF cards in true IDE mode and a nice
IDE-connector-like case. You might want to check
the adapter and try a different card, because in
general, the Buddha works fine with CF cards.

ciao,
