OK - what am I doing wrong with Archon?

I've tried many ADF's and burning them to disk via Amiga Explorer... and no luck. Tried booting in pal/ntsc for each image, even on a brand new DD disk that I opened the box of just yesterday.

I seem to have horrendous luck with Archon - am I loopy or is there a reason it's difficult to get running?

Have you tried this compilation version? Should even work on KS 1.3.

edit - found it somewhere else, will give it a go, thank you!

edit 2 - constant guru meditation - just like the original. What am I missing? machine is A500 with trapdoor 512K card.

From memory, standard Archon version requires Kickstart 1.1. Can't say whether fast memory (like your pseudo-fast extra 512K) will stop it running or not. It was originally produced when only the A1000 existed. As specified above, there are modified version which can let it run on Kickstart 1.3, and there are also tools such as Degrader which "remove" the fast memory and allow some programs to run.

Looks like Calgor's close -

my A500 apparently has the "make trapdoor ram Chip ram" mod done by moving jumpers. However some games want 1MB chip ram... soooo... Looks like I'm using the dead 6A mobo I have to cannibalize ram chips and pop 'em on this 6A for 1MB chip... then undo the mod and I have 1MB chip/512K 'pseudo-fast' right?

Then many incompatibilities be-gone?

Degrader should also be able to remove the 1MB chip and make it look like 512K chip for some games, so maybe you can keep your 1MB chip hardware mod. I don't think that many games require 1MB Chip RAM though.

I have a Phoenix Board with 1MB Chip and 1MB slow fast (at location $C0000..) so I used degrader and similar tools for compatibility with some games in KickStart 1.3. There are also some bootblock tools where you can hit a Function key and it reboots choosing the new memory config. Sorry don't know which ones, if you do a search maybe you will find some or someone else can point to exact tools.

Sadly a small number of games still required Kickstart 1.1 and did not work (later you could use a program such as Blizkick to load whatever kickstart version you like). Also I am not sure the Degrader type patches worked for 100% of software that required no fast mem or only 512K chip mem, but they had a very good strike rate for me.

The planetemu game [Archon & One on One & Archon II (19xx)(PHR-Crew).zip] needs Kick 1.2 to run. Memory config/video mode makes no difference. The ADF may be patched to run on 1.3 by editing in hex editor.
(if numbers don't match then game is not the same and won't work)

Offset 6, change 3CB3 to 40FF
Offset 14E,change 8DD0 to 8984

save ADF and re-write to floppy.
Starts OK on real A500/1.3 1mb chip
Only guarantee game to start, not to stay running.
Repairs too extensive to consider Kick 2.

That is not true! The compilation works fine on 1.3, however, it doesn't seem to work on ChipRam only machines. Works fine on 1.3 512/512, crashes on 1.3 1mb. There's no need for any 1.3 patch, however, your patch might have fixed the crash on 1mb chip machines.

AB+ states that 1MB chip is the config in use. Mine is setup likewise. So I had to modify to get it to start. I would check 512/512 but that would require opening up the Amiga and it doesn't seem worth it.

Yes, guess who told AB+ about the 1MB thingie. ;D Anyway, I checked your patch and I am now actually surprised that the compilation ever worked on 1.3 due to the absolute ROM jump straight into some data.

How about jewels cracks for Archon 1 and 2. These games deserve a proper standalone release, fixed for all Amigas.
