The Blitz

Hello everyone, I recently aquired a Petro T. Tyschtschenko A1200 to get a bit of Amiga500 days nostalgia plus the obvious upgrade and a nice hard drive etc.
I wondered if some kind person could please upload a copy of the original Blitz Basic (AMIGA 500) manual to somewhere for me..

I know Im in for an avalanche of people telling me to use blitz 2 or ami blitz or blitz3d or blitzmax or (insert favorite Blitz/Amos/other coding language here) but I would really like to learn Blitz 1 because it seams VERY simple :nuts and I had a friend (Simon Taylor now Plastic Cow games) back in the 90`s who made some really great games with it and got good ratings in Amiga magazines.

I ripped a list of the blitz basic commands from LSD Docs disk 019 and googled the crap out of it but it seems to have disappeared in favor of all the above mentioned versions manuals. It seems like a shame its not there, the examples are easily readable and I want to start out very simple.

PLEEEEAAASE Someone!!!!:help

Thank you for the reply s2325, I have these and despite the title they too are Blitz Basic 2 guides.. The commands are not at all compatible im afraid.

What about pdf? My post was edited.

I have looked at these over the last few days and they look pretty good but again they are blitz 2.. I guess Blitz 1 either wasnt well known or was quickly superseded. I realize Blitz 2 is more powerful and if needs be I will have a go at it but TBH its not gonna scratch my nostalgia itch.. I used GL Basic on the PC/GP2x and I love it... Blitz 1 seems quite similar but blitz 2 seems 'orrible to me lol

back2roots has BltzBasic v1 download - "Blitz Basic 1 ECS Mark Sibly / Memory and Storage Technology 1990"

edit: this one is already in Tosec: (eab fileserver)
Blitz Basic v2.0 (1990)(Memory and Storage Technology)(Disk 1 of 2).zip
Blitz Basic v2.0 (1990)(Memory and Storage Technology)(Disk 2 of 2).zip

edit: damn, the manual your looking for only? :D

@emufan Hi, thanks for the reply.. Yeah thats the ADF I am messing around with.. But there is no manual just a few good little examples.. (some of it commented, some of it not).

Just to confuse matters its BLITZ BASIC version 2.0 (NOT Blitz basic2 version x.x)

After 3 days off work googling for the original blitz basic manual It appears there isnt one online. There are however 20 or so appearences of blitz2 manual/guide and other related magazine stuff.

Im very surprised at that :/

I think its gonna take someone kind to upload it before me or anyone else can really use that BB1 ADF

emufan 10 January 2014 17:08

yeah, the version'ing was confusing me a bit :)

twiggy owns a manual for version 1 - maybe you can visit him and lend the book for a copy session.

Seems like everybody forgot about BB1 once BB2 came out.. Can't find much either.

I found this, and I guess this is source for BB1?

Not much, but better than nothing.

That looks promising, well.. 2009.. I hope he is still around, he might not have it now, Ill message him tho. ;)

@Demolition Ill have a look now :)

..... Nope.. Blitz 2 syntax and wont compile.

I may give up and try again with Blitz 2 but its a shame because I have a couple of sprites on mouse and joystick with foreground and background working in BB1 (nothing in BB2 yet)

Go for it, there are a fair few people on here still using Blitz2 and it's pretty powerful once you get used to it. :)

Is BB2 backwards compatible with BB1 code, that is, is BB2 just an extended version of the original BB or did they change some integral parts?

Der Wanderer 11 January 2014 06:41

@demolition
There probably a reason why BlitzBasic2 superseded BlitzBasic1 so quickly...

I have never seen BlitzBasic1, nor have I seen any program written in it. But BlitzBasic2 can read BlitzBasic1 source code files (this are NOT text files), so I assume the syntax is reasonably similar. The so called "BlitzLibs" are probably not 100% compatible though, but there is a good chance that BB2 is almost a superset. Give it a try maybe.

Defender 12 January 2014 17:55

@ Der Wanderer.. Hi, I tried compiling the example sourse files that came with blitz 1 in the blitz 2 compiler.. It didnt work so I tried altering the things that brought up an error, basically everything gives an error lol..

Im gonna have a go at Blitz 2 with a view to a simple pong game using Bobs but there is much still to baffle me.. blit modes, slices, screen modes, colour pallets, colisions etc.. All of which are alien to me with Blitz2

Twiggy 14 January 2014 22:46

Hi. I've got the Blitz 1 manual and I scanned it in. Get it here:
