Great Giana Sisters SE

Closing this thread but leaving here for historical purposes. Official thread for this is here: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=83683

Yet another "Special Edition" hack, this time the great Giana Sisters. Unfortunately Mum's coming up to stay shortly so I don't have time to work on it for at least a week or so, but thought I'd at least share what I've done so far.

* New CDXL intro (only for CD32 gamers of course, adapted from the DS edition)

* New title screen (A direct swap for the original 320x400 HiRes HAM6 image, taken from the DeviantArt page of LizVanPierce)

* Replacement graphics for Giana (both regular and "punk" mode), as well as the eye monster and "bird" goomba. All of these graphics (42 frames so far) are sourced from the Nintendo DS edition.

* Credits screen text has some alterations, primarily with instructions on how to use Clock and Bomb! (Fire+Down+Left and Fire+Down+Right, extremely obscure features that weren't properly documented in the game's instruction sheet - only the C64 controls were covered!).

Still at least four more enemies to swap out (the lobster thing, the bee, the regular goomba and the piranha). Not sure what else to try doing.

Awesome! Perhaps you could fix the well known spelling mistake in the title too? In the part when the screen scrolls left and right. It's says "GIANNA".

I'm a fan of the original artwork, but it does look nice to see the new artwork implemented in the old game.

Nice work Earok

Cheers guys

@hipoonios I had a quick go at editing the levels, didn't really work out though. I was only successful in changing the level layout physically but not visually (eg I made platforms in level one, but while I could jump on them I couldn't see them)

That would be pretty nifty, especially if we can port the numerous Giana Sisters unofficial sequels on C64 across

Exactly, Just like what Mario Maker is doing for the WiiU. It would be fun.

This is incredibly cool!

Have you found the tile-graphics and can change them aswell? Would be fun to not just update the sprites.

And while we're dreaming, what about the copperlist, could a sky-rainbow be hacked in there ?

Nice. But the most important fix would be proper jump controls if this is possible. Compared with the really good C64 version it's like a moon jump on the Amiga. Awful.

@JayMiner I'm not quite sure about the tiles, I haven't looked into it too deeply. They're plainly visible in the data but it looks like they're repeated several places, I think for the different kinds of levels. Not 100% sure how they work but it might be a fair amount of effort to replace them all.

Come to think of it, it looks like some of the tiles are basic copies of the C64 version (double wide pixels etc). Maybe it is worth spending some time replacing them with the DS counterparts.

Regarding copper skies, that would be amazing but likely beyond my abilities. IF I could work out how to disassemble the executable, maybe..

@Retro-Nerd I'm a little hesitant about the idea of tweaking the physics, at the risk of breaking things elsewhere. eg the bouncing ball on level 3 that's a little tricky to get over, I think it reaches higher on the Amiga version than on the C64 so tweaking the physics might make it harder still.

That is no spelling Mistake . It´s the ACTUAL Title of the game.

The Artist who done the Cover Art made the spelling error, (wrote Giana, instead of Gianna ) But it was to Late in production to change that, and Rainbow Arts basically said : "Nevermind"

Thats the REAL Reason,
if you dont belive me ask Chris Hülsbeck.

However all throughout the game it says GIANA, so I tend to disagree.
