Stuttering and slow performance

Hi everyone,

I've installed winuae on my mac pro retina on boot camp windows 7, When I first installed winuae just after installing win7 and updating gfx driver, all was fine, super fast, no stuttering, since installing games that have installed direct x bits and bobs, winuae has stuttered almost to a halt!

Its using 160percent cpu and only 30fps with sound stuttering

Any one ideas?

cheers
Ian

Try reinstalling WinUAE and tell it to use DirectX maybe? Remember to remove host configurations first. Toni can probably help you better, without more info this is just a guess.

Difficult to answer without logs.

Try switching DirectDraw<>D3D (Note that you need to install DirectX redistributable package, Windows, any version, not even 7 or 8, does not come with full DirectX, full installation is needed for Direct3D support. DX that comes with older games may not be new enough.)

Next time save winuaelog.txt when it works, compare logs when it stops working.

I really doubt winuae has anything to do with it. Typically these sorts of problems are caused by a misbehaving driver, or some application that is causing the system to spend a lot of time in the kernel. There are a few mediocre virus protection programs that out there that are poorly behaved and can cause the system to spend so much time in the kernel that there isn't enough left for applications. Or, they temporarily block access to a device, holding up other applications.

I would run winuae and run task manager at the same time with kernel usage displayed on the performance graph and see if some other process is grabbing all the CPU time when you're running winuae and you see stuttering.

re stuttering

Thanks guys for your help

I've got it to work by turning off filters and lowering resolution to 720x568, even though I've had it working full resolution and filters before, so I'm guesing its the gfx driver thats got a problem with it.

Btw in the task manger winuae only uses 8% of cpu when it was stuttering and nothing else taking up the cpu's time.

Just an idea: Does it work better if you select 'Above Normal' for 'When Active' on the 'Pri. & Extensions' panel?
