CD32 sound fading in and out
This is strange - my CD32 has been working fine for the past several months since I got it. However, I went to play it today, and I'm getting a bunch of weird errors. The console got stuck at the disc loading splash screen a few times, and in every game I've tried, the sound has been fading in and out at random times. It happens constantly and frequently - it'll go real quiet for a second, like someone is turning the volume down, then fade back in to normal sound, with the audio in a different position like it was playing in the background.
When I play Chuck Rock, the music is turned way, way, way down, to the point where if I turn my TV waaaaaay up I can barely hear it playing. This makes me think that when my CD32 is going quiet in other games, it's actually doing this, not going completely mute. For the record, it wasn't doing any of this as recently as yesterday. Chuck rock used to play normally. What could be causing this, and what can I do to fix it? And, just in case someone asks, yes, the audio lines are connected correctly. As I said before, it was working yesterday and I haven't touched anything since. EDIT: Aw crap, I didn't mean to put this in the WinUAE support forum. Can someone move it to the right forum for me? |

It's probably time for a new set of capacitors, it happens to all of them eventually.

Well I did some additional testing this morning and found out that, while the rear audio jacks are still doing the fade-in-fade-out routine, the headphone jack up front is working like normal. So, for the time being, I can at least connect my TV using that.
But you say the problem sounds like capacitors needing replacement? And idea which ones? |

A pair of 22uF/16V very near the audio output plugs are the usual culprits.
Also is important the fact that some revisions of the CD32 have the largest capacitors inside soldered inverted (typical Commodore error), so they must be checked from the underside with a voltmeter to check they are in the correct orientation. |
