Post USB-mouse compatibility list (Cocolino)

-------------------
THIS POST NO LONGER UPDATED! --> just find a mouse that originally comes with its own USB -> PS/2 adapter and you should be rollin' with your Cocolino!
-------------------

This thread is for finding out & listing compatible USB mice for the Cocolino mouse adapter by Elbox (why not other mouse adapters too).

If your mouse comes ready with a USB -> PS/2 adapter it's likely to work. But it maybe has to be an adapter that originally came with the mouse or branded Microsoft/Logitech or other known brand.

And remember to state:

1. the brand and model of the mouse
2. if the mouse included a USB -> PS/2 adapter
2. if the mouse is wireless
3. if you have tested/do not have tested the mentioned mouse

Any experience and knowledge welcome. It hope this helps finding a suitable mouse for Cocolino-users.
Now, let's start:

Cocolino (WORKS):
* Logitech Optical Wheelmouse
* Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 (MSIE 3.0)

* Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical

Cocolino (MAY WORK - UNTESTED) - e.g. mouse came with a USB -> PS/2 adapter and thus *MAY* work.
* Logitech MX310

Cocolino (DOESN'T WORK)
* Dell XN966
* Dell M-UX

I think it works fine with any USB mouse, and the adapters are all the same.

Tested so far: MSIE 3.0, Logitech Optical wheelmouse, both worked.

Only heads-up I think should be
1) too-high-dpi mice (laser mice, opticals are fine)
2) mice with movement acceleration in hardware

My Logitech had this built in acceleration, which resulted in "oops! and ooops now I'm over there" (slippery bar of soap feeling) with sens and acc set to lowest in WB.

If you want to move the pointer a screenful by moving the mouse 5 mm, go ahead and get a laser mouse.

Thanks for info . I'm not sure if to test a new mouse successfully your miggy needs to be rebooted after plugging the mouse in order for the Cocolino to initialize itself.

Am i right?

Only mice which can do both USB *and* PS/2 work with such an adapter. These mice usually come with an adapter, so there is no need to buy one seperately.

What Thomas said is true. USB and PS/2 are NOT electrically compatible. The mouse must have a PS/2 fallback mode for this adapter to work, the adapter has no electronics in it to do USB / PS/2 conversion.

OK we can change this thread little. Firstly: which mice DO come with a USB -> PS/2 adapter and secondly: does it work with cocolino (or other mouse-adapter)?

Logitech MX310 comes with this adapter and works in both modes.
No idea for cocolino, sorry.

Thankso, added to the list and also added a new title
"Cocolino (MAY WORK - UNTESTED)" to list mice that included a USB -> PS/2 adapter and thus *MAY* work with Cocolino. Updated the initial post accordingly too.

It might very well be true that mice need a PS/2 fallback mode, but I think they often have. Maybe some gamer mice are special. The reason I think so is that "just plugging on a green adapter" has worked every single time over at least the last 8 years, for each type of mouse that I've owned. It has not been that often, but it's worked every time. Maybe 10 different mice or so. Maybe I'm lucky.

If you want buying advice, go to the nearest store and put your hand on some optical mice, select one you like and make sure it comes with a PS2 adapter. And enjoy the smoothness...

Dell XN966 USB mice do NOT work in PS/2 fallback mode with green adapters which is a shame cos I get them free from work and they are very very cheap, sub £3 on eBay and reasonably comfortable.

Neither do Dell M-UX.

Both are rebranded Logitech I think.

Thanks Photon, but since it's not 100% sure that all mice with the PS/2 adapter work, i decided to start this thread. Also if you happen to find a USB mouse e.g. from a car boot sale, you don't necessarily know if it originally included a USB -> PS/2 adapter or not. So this will help all people interested to find a suitable mouse for their Cocolino-adapter.
(updated alexh info)

If it comes from a car boot, you also don't know if it works, or if works but has a crappy sensor... In a store you can read the packaging if it's usb AND ps2 compatible...

Just plugged in a Microsoft Wheelmouse Optical here, works fine. (Says "Microsoft Wheelmouse Optical USB and PS2 compatible" on the bottom.) They're quite good and only 15€, no need for a car boot sale.

Any proof of this? I see it as someone testing a USB-only mouse in a PS2 adapter and concluding that the adapter is different - I mean, couldn't you remove that 'catch'?

I have the exact mouse, reads on the bottom it's compatible. But somehow it doesn't work for me. Buggy USB->PS/2 adaptor? Mouse works under WinXP.

My case would cut it. I changed the "catch" though. But i think maybe there are too many factors in this area. Do you think this thread is quite useless then?

Would different mice come with a different USB->PS/2 adapter perhaps?

EDIT: i'll try with a different adapter when i get a hold of one. I just have one of them.

The Microsoft mouse was shipped with a different adapter than i previously tried and guess what: i found another adapter that reads "Microsoft" on it and the mouse works now ! The other adapter didn't have any text on it.

So either the other adapter was bust or there are differences between them. Hmm... this thread maybe obsolete then, just one advice: maybe use *only* a USB->PS/2 adapter that has a known brand on it e.g. Microsoft or Logitech etc. ?

Anyways now i'm a happy user with a good optical mouse (and not going back to ball-point/miggy mouse anymore!) .

Advice: Use mice known to have ps/2 fallback. If the mouse was shipped with a usb -> ps/2 adapter, use that specific adapter.

PS/2 fallback is not uncommon, but especially bulk/oem mice don't have it. If you buy it retail, it usually will have it and include the adapter. This is just like the 90s when RS-232 mice were being phased out and ps/2 started to become popular. Most retail ps/2 mice had RS-232 fallback and shipped with the adapter. OEM versions of the same mice did not and didn't work with those adapters..

If no adapter is included in the package, then your chances of having ps/2 fallback are smaller.

There are so many mice in the world, that it's sort of pointless to have a works/not works list.. Just buy ones with the adapter included or ask the retailer about getting to return it if it was unsuitable.

Parsing error. Sexual innuendo? Explain, if you have the urge.

Hehe, ok Bamiga, good that you got it to work Did it work with the non-Microsoft adapter in the PS2-port on PC you mean!?

If so, weird. (And confirmation that there are different adapters.) If not, the adapter could be in non-working order. Then it still remains to be proven...

And btw, sometimes Photons are stubborn!
