Unhappy I think I've burnt something...:(

Not a happy boy.

The good news (if any) is that its not my indivision (tested on desktop miggy, can see Kickstart screen), or 060 card (not in the case at the time)

Basically I was messing around with my IDEFix whilst trying to get it to see my CF (in order to format blah blah) What worries me is the tower I've just got from Scrappysphynx doesn't have an on/off switch. Powering down done by pulling kettle plug out PSU... yes I know....

No pops or bangs, but a nasty smell..... for about 2 seconds until I pulled the power.

Hw do I go about diagnosing what is (likely) to be borked. PSU still seems to work as fan turns.

The other good-ish news is that I've got plenty of spares (Including Motherboards).... but thats not the point .

etc

along with losts of

Andrew

Probably just a burned trace under the IDEfix board. Common mistake, I'm afraid.

Seems to be more than that....

If I run my desktop with nothing connected (save for indivision) I get a Kickstart screen, as it is obviously looking for something to do. The tower shows no sign of life whatsoever, apart from a rather weakly lit power LED. CDrom drive opens and shuts but thats it.

Did you mount the Microdrive in a CF > ide adapter or did you just plug it straight into the Idefix ?!

PSU can still be toast... I believe the Fan uses one of the 12V rail so in theory the other rails could be dead, Get out the trusty Ohmmeter and check for 5V and 12V on the rails... usually a bad smell is a PSU. You would prob see the result of a damaged component on the Amiga board if you toasted that... (Use the nose and start sniffing for residual smells.

FOL, 'touché'

Gives me an excuse to nag my bro for my multimeter, although wont be able to get it until the weekend. I do however have one of the Amigakit PSU's with the 1200 connector on it, although to test the board with that I would have to strip the tower as the current PSU seems to be hardwired in

yes I know it doesnt show much but there's no hole for an A1200 plug to the board - the blue cable where the power connector is, comes from the PSU....

strange. To be honest I'd prefer it with the Amigakit PSU in as there's an on/off switch

Board thus far looks fine, not checked the underside but will have to remove it if I am shifting the PSU so.....

you built it ?!

Sorry wasn't meaning to sound disparaging... just felt a bit weird connecting the kettle plug and "hearing" live electricity.....

My expertise with power supplies is minimal, so kudos but I'm not keen on dabbling to add the wiring (unless its simple) fried Andy is no use to anyone. I thought using the Amigakit Powersupply I already have would be a simple solution... Although I'd still have to dremel the back of the tower so the connector will fit. Assuming the Motherboard is ok

Bare board with indy attached running on Amigakit PSU gives me

Watching History documentary in "Picture in Picture" in the corner....

Now of course that doesn't mean that the board isnt goosed but seems encouraging.

Got one of these... it actually has an Amiga connector was thinking of using this although I will have to Dremel the case as where the power supply sits is between the two holes:

Before I dremel anything I shall haveto "fit" the PSU in the case and see if the Amiga connector is long enough to come out the case and back on itself in order to connect to the board connector.

@asm1

We can provide a blue -12v wire and pin to crimp onto your PSU to make it compatible with the Z4 tower- so you dont need to Dremel your case.

We can provide it free with your next order. Hope this helps.

@Amigakit.. thanks but I've already done the hard bit, i.e. getting the power cableout the bottom slot in the case:

The square power connector is slightly wider than the slot so pliers were applied to bend enough of the slot so it would fit. Yes the case is a weebit marked but bleh. Am going to refit the board so I can see where to dremel and mark it off.

cheers

Andrew

There is no need to connect the square power connector or Dremel the backplate. You just need access to the middle hole in the Power connector for -12v.

didn't read everything here but a nasty smell is most likely a blown capacitor in your psu.
