I'll start with a tip (actually a nuisance in my eyes) for newcomers to the game:
Don't bother trying shooting diagonally, you can't.

There are two exceptions, as far as I remember.
When you are in the tank and when you have the heavy machine gun.
In this case, you will have to alternate between pressing left/right and up (or down if you jump shoot), causing you character to do a quarter-circle sweep shot.

By the way, I suppose Final Burn Alpha and Nebula were forgotten. Or it there any reason why they cannot be used?

It's just a suggestion for those who don't know which emulator to use. Edited the part in the first post

Good.
It's not that obvious with console games, some count the current life that you're "using" some don't...
Glad we sorted that.
(because I can't see any options to change that here in Kawaks anyways... )

Press the test/service mode key once the game is loaded and the bios tests are finished (F11 by default I think in Kawaks) -> setting up the soft dips -> slot 1 Metal Slug.

The settings TCD mentioned are those by default.
Although you can choose to turn the blood on, making the game much more interesting .
Of course German players are forbidden to do so by the BPjM.

I'd like to know what the "slug" in this classic's title means. I've found a couple of totally different meanings for "slug".

So does someone know whether this game's title means "Metal Snail" or something like "raw piece of Metal"?

Btw., nice scores so far.

Have a look here : http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=met...detail&id=1613

Quote:
Etymology of 'Metal Slug' : Meeher, the lead designer of the game for Nazca, wanted to create an armored fighting vehicle that could crawl on the ground like a 'slug', similar to a snail but without an outer shell protecting its body. The word 'metal' in the title indicates that the vehicle is mechanical. Initially players regarded the title as being 'not good enough'. Meeher later joked about the title, saying 'Maybe I don't make much [sic] of a sense?'.
Edit : Just found this :
Quote:
Cliff Reese holds the official record for this game with 1,044,890 points.
Hmm...

Somehow, I believe this game was conceived as a score competition game.

Enemies who respawn (until you destroy something, barrels/hut/boats) don't give points (with the exception of those giant snow ball soldiers in level 3???), some hard to get items give a decent amount of points and you have a score reward for not dying (through prisoners bonus)

Sounds a bit like you searched for these spots But yes, I also think that the origin of the game (arcade) explains why it is this way.
Thanks for entering this very silent round

Actually, I did not look for these kind of spots before the message about the "official record" (I know the no score leeching rule by the way, although I was very tempted to keep killing those *$*^*@! medusa heads just for fun in Rondo of blood ).

Until then I thought it was a bit like Gauntlet or others, i.e. in some spots there are enemy generators and you can keep killing them and getting points for that.

Therefore I believed that record runners would try and milk those spots trying to do know exactly how much time they would need to go to the boss, so has not to reach the time limit. Hence I experimented to see if that was the case.

what I did do though, was to try and learn how to effectively get those hard to get point items (for instance the one that appears under the beginning of the bridge in mission 2).

I see The fun thing about Metal Slug IMO is, that you can either play it by just bashing through the enemy hordes and getting to the level exit or have a more 'tactical' approach (regarding ammo and like you said bonus items). Over the time you refine your way through the levels slightly. I haven't really played to gain the most points before (tried to save all prisoners several times though), but getting over a million means that you really have to make a perfect run Quite impressive score Cliff got there
