Amiga 1000 hard drive?

Does anyone know how to emulate a hard drive in WinUae to an Amiga 1000 NTSC with 1.0 or 1.1 ROM? I'm aware that the Amiga cannot auto-boot from HDD with ROMs older than 1.3. But I want to use 1.0 or 1.1 for nostalgy. I do not need a bootable HDD, just a big "external" drive for accessing files.

I had no luck so far: With the 1.0 or 1.1 roms, WinUae simply crashes when adding a hard drive in the config. With the Bootstrap ROM (64K) it doesn't crash, it just doesn't see the HDD.

Appreciate any help or ideas!

the easy way is select a directory on your pc and copy the workbench files there

in winuae go to cd & hardrives and select " add directory or archive" then select add directory

Thanks for your answer, stx2199. I've tried that, same story as with HDF files: It either crashes or doesn't seem to recognize that there's a drive. It does work with kickstart 1.3, but the whole idea is emulating an "authentic" Amiga 1000 (kick 1.0 or 1.1) with some access to a bigger storage media than 880K floppies....

surely it doesn't work because those old kickstarts haven't any hardisk support

The Spirit Technologies HDA-506 on the A1000 supported auto-booting under Kickstart 1.2 before RDB came along in Kickstart 1.3. The HDA-506 uses an 8-bit ISA MFM or RLL HD controller like the OMTI 5527. I have never tried it under Kickstart 1.0 or 1.1 though.

Does WinUAE support emulating the HDA-506? I still have mine intact.

@stx2199: Right, I guess I'll have to stick with kickstart 1.2 if I want HDD.

@Magic: WinUae supports The Spirit Technologies HDA-506. I'm gonna look for some drivers and see if it will work with kickstart 1.0 or 1.1.

Is anyone aware of any other storage media (larger than 880K) that existed for the early A1000...? Which can be emulated.

The Comspec SA1000 SCSI Controller worked with Kickstart 1.2 , and even loaded the Kickstart into the First HD Sectors this was before RDB was Created.

HD boot using KS 1.0/1.1 is supported but it seems to have been broken for a long time, probably since 3.6.

KS 1.2 HDF (must be OFS formatted!) and directory filesystem automount is working.

@Toni Wilen, thanks for your reply. Is there any way to make a hard drive visible in 1.0/1.1? Doesn't need to be bootable - just need to access a lot of files. Tried with WinUae 2.7, but didn't seem to work either...

The Tecmar T-Disk should work under 1.0/1.1.

KS 1.0-1.2 support was added in some pre-3.6 version. 3.5 probably works.
(will be fixed when I have some idea what exactly went wrong)

EDIT: Fixed in next beta (winuae.7z already fixed. Don't ask, just search )

@mark_k: Cool, the first hard drive for the Amiga. I can see that it can be emulated in WinUae. But unfortunately, I can't find any driver disk on the internet...

T-Disk software at http://www.l8r.net/install/other/69/

You could also look into the Xebec 9720H.

T-Disk is a little tricky for noobs to set up, you can get some hints from this thread. Probably a lot easier to use the next WinUAE beta and a shared folder.

@mark_k, thanks a lot! I think that thread is just what i needed, cos I did indeed get problems with the T-disk installation last night. Was considering the shared folder option, but that would mean kickstart 1.2. Wanted to stick to 1.0 or 1.1 to keep the A1000 feeling.

Shared folder on Kickstart 1.0/1.1 should be working again in the next beta, as mentioned above.
