A500 essential extras and mods

Hey all,

No matter how much I try to get away with the excellent WinUAE I really would rather have a real A500.

I know these days you can buy a lot of add ons and mods with technology that wasn't around in the days of old.
Can anyone let me know what is indispensable and will greatly enhance the experience?

In that case I would look out for either an A590 or a GVP HD8+ (as Alex and I discussed in this thread... http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=43130 from yesterday...

I think the GVP is a nicer item...

Booo! I would say that the most essential add-ons are a 512 KB RAM expansion and an extra floppy drive (or two). A really nice joystick, a TV adapter (preferably one modded to generate S-Video Output) and lots of fun games are also recommended.

A500 demos look best on a C1081 monitor.

A Scart cable for it, a stereo that was top notch in the mid-90s, a 512K ram expansion, and you're in heaven

An extra drive could save some disc swapping if you fancy multidisk games.

For data transfer I recommend a sidecar IDE interface+an IDE-to-CF adapter. And a 1GB Sandisk Extreme III Compact Flash card for it.

If you want to never write an adf to floppy ever, you need at least a 68020 accelerator + WHDload. IIRC there are packs of "ClassicWB" with WHDload and a bunch of nice stuff pre-installed. Then you can prepare a CF pretty quickly in WinUAE and double-click icons to run game after game..

For WHDLoad use it's much better A500+ with 1 MB CHIP Ram as standard and upgradable to 2 MB CHIP by dedicated expansion in the trapdoor.
You could have a KickSwitcher with 1.3 and 2.04 ROM to solve incompatibility probems with games on floppy.

Kola: what is essential depends on what you want to do with your 500... But I would really say a hard drive would be high on my list. I used a Supra SCSI interface and various HDD's from 40MB to 600MB or maybe 1GB, can't remember, as well as Zip drives, and a SCSI CD .....
I would also say an accelerator at some point, but they seem to be pretty uncommon nowadays

I really mis my fairly tricked-out 500 system... Just before the 500 and the accel. died, I had: A500 rev. 6, KS3.1, 2MB chip, 34MB fast RAM, (32MB on accel., 2MB in SCSI interface) Derringer '030 + '882 @ 50MHz, ~600MB HDD, Zip 100, Toshiba 4x CD-ROM (ooooh, 4x ... ) DCTV, can't remember what printer I had back then, tho....

Good luck with your 500.... I understand some ppl. prefer the 1200 (I own 3 myself) but the 500 was my first ever miggy.... so I understand...
