Rare Ram Expansion for A500 - A1000 - 8MB

Don't see too many of these - a huge 8MB expansion for an A500 or A1000...

Made by Cortex...

It's in great condition...

It has the through port option.
I don't have the power supply - I think it may have been optional - guess you may need it if using something via the through port... there is no indication as to what power supply to use - I will have to research this, unless anyone knows...

I don't know whether I will use it or not now as I have just taken delivery of an A600 so it might find itself creeping back onto ebay at some stage but it's such a nice robust old thing - I would kick myself if I ever picked up an A500 and I had got rid of this - I don't suppose you would see too many of these.

Nice, how much would one of them have cost you back in the day I wonder, I wonder how much they'd go on ebay for today?

Not much when you can get an A590 or a GVP HD8+ which also has SCSI for £50

Going by some old Amiga Format magazine adverts, something like this could sell for up to around £289.00 back in the day.

I paid a tenner for it - which was of course a real bargain.

It isn't rare in the sense that I could retire from the proceeds if I sold it... you just don't see too many around - I used to have a Supra RAM expansion a while back - I bought it as untested but on setting up I discovered it had 8MB and not 2 as stated - that was a result.

The Supra certainly took up less desk space than the Cortex would but I still think the Cortex is a nice find.

It would be very interesting to see what either an A590 or a GVP HD8+ do go for in good condition on ebay now - I might keep an eye out for these... there's nothing on ebay like that at present...

As the expression goes on eab... thinks are worth as much as you want to pay for them.

Someone got a really nice item there Alex - and in very good condition as well... I hope it worked... if it does and the buyer has a power supply for it I bet they are very happy with that purchase...

He doesn't need one. Final auction prices of under £50 are not uncommon for A590/GVP HD8+

Only problem with that is you need two 4mb 30 pin simms to achieve the 8mb... I haven't found them so easy to come by.

The Cortex ram brick lets you use 8 1mb simms it seems, which can be had for 8 pence.

They are like dog shit. They are everywhere. They made hundreds of millions of them.

First search 4 x 4MB 30-pin SIMM for £2.80!!

Yes - you are right the Supra is much more slimline...
I used to have an 8MB Supra... The only picture I have of it now is this one with it's lid off...

The Cortex does have the advantage of providing you with a place to stand your Tea Cup though...

I used to have Supra 28 MHz, too. It was nippy compared to original but needed at least that slow ram expansion to work. It really accelerated things - for instance F1GP and Lotus series. And floppy reading too!

Looks lovely peter!!!!!

hey, I have noticed that the card has a through port, however the casing does not!?

so although you could use the card with a combination of others (say hardddisk drive) you cannot as theres no opening in the metal case....

I have some hardware here i need to submit to Alex on amiga.resource including a dissaembled GVP ram simm

The casing does have a side panel - the removal of two small screws underneath allows the panel to be removed and gives access to the through port...

Having just got hold of an A500 it at last gave me the chance to fully test the Cortex Expansion I have... I am pleased to report that it works fine with all 8MB of RAM showing up - and the little Green light works!!!

I am listing my Cortex 8MB A500 RAM expansion on Ebay later tonight - I'll put the link in the Ebay section when I do it....

Rather than have it sit in a box it makes sense to sell it and let someone else enjoy it!
It is a great item and I have never seen another one - it is a piece of Amiga history now being featured on the Amiga Resourse website...!

I am selling my A500 set up to fund other projects - like what's for dinner tomorrow...

I was going to post something like that, Paul.

Then I saw that you'd mentioned your interest earlier, so left it open for you.

It's a superb add-on for an A500.
