Another quick test:

Column1: Original image in 24bit color, just for comparison (I can't use this in game)
Column2: HAM8 conversion, no adjustment
Column3: HAM8 conversion, 50% contrast/saturation adjustment
Column4: HAM8 conversion, full contrast/saturation adjustment (original)

Row2
Column2: HAM8 conversion, saturation adjustment only
Column3: HAM8 conversion, contrast adjustment only

While this is only one frame, IMO it's a reasonable one to test with - there's a mix of colours and bright/dark areas.

Any thoughts?
Personally I'd go with either:
Column3: HAM8 conversion, 50% contrast/saturation adjustment

Row2
Column3: HAM8 conversion, contrast adjustment only

...but if I had to choose one then:
Row2
Column3: HAM8 conversion, contrast adjustment only

I was thinking exactly the same!

Thanks guys!

I'm wasting too much time on this heh. I need to do something and stick with it.

One thing I've realised is that I could have run the source image through post-processing filters to smoothen out the artifacts, as well as higher quality down-scaling and conversion. To that end, I've done more experimenting.

Here's what I think I'll probably do.

In each section, the bottom left images are what it looks like in the current version, the bottom right images are what I'm planning to do (unless there's I've obviously made a mess up here?). HAM6 images will remain at full contrast/saturation, HAM8 at half that.

I thought I'd be clever and do GIF animations to show the difference, sadly that was a fatally flawed plan - GIF is limited to 256 colour frames of course so the images are dithered.

It's sad that, even in this day and age, there isn't a standard and widely used image animation format for web that can match HAM8! In any case, the different (particularly in dark areas such as background clouds) should be apparent.

Alright, AGA HDD V1.3. I'll hang off on doing the other updates for another day or so but (hopefully) it's agreed this is the best looking version yet?

APNG should give you full 24Bit - most browsers are supporting it

Heya earok,

Have finished testing / playing completely through the game

Everything works perfectly now i.e. the mirroring, count-down sequences and the final Victory screen

Also did a quick compare of v1.2 vs. v1.3 by running each side-by-side; and the later looks much better in terms of colour / clarity

One small thing though, regarding the "ReadMe", I see you've updated it to:

Quote:
- 600MB of free HDD space, OR
It does actually take roughly 640MB though:

For emulation users; I've now created a bare-bones .HDF of v1.3

Download from the EAB File Server under the directory "~Uploads/DamienD/HDFs".

Hi earok,

One thing I've noticed with v1.3 as opposed to the initial release is that everything seems "zoomed in" so to speak.

Here are screenshots of the exact same frames:

Cheers for the test!

@Damien that is true. The thinking went that, given we had to downscale the resolution significantly, trimming a small amount off the edges went a long way towards preserving detail in the center.

No problem

Personally I think it's probably better seeing more background / stuff on screen but that's just me... anyway, obviously it's your project so

Thanks for all your work on this

Alright, I think we're good. If there's no breaking issues, this is likely to be the final Time Gal update. I'll wait a little bit before replacing the links on the site.

1.3 AGA ISO (4X CD-Drive required, not compatible with CD32)
https://mega.nz/#!A2ASgahI!bAE1CyD6y...ZAUjYNzi-vx9eM

1.3 AGA HDD
https://mega.nz/#!5nZ1CAhL!_BF0F35eL...fEXs52Gse9ZN_U

1.3 OCS and CD32 ISO

1.3 OCS HDD

Road Avenger AGA has a minor bug (death scenes don't play in 'watch all scenes' mode) and also has artifacting issues. I could take a look at that at some point.

Edit: And, thanks for the kind words guys

Details are lost either way - with a slight zoom, some details that would be lost in the middle (due to being scaled down to the point that pixels merge into each other) are preserved.
