But it wasn't the driver you pay for!

You pay for extra classes which came with each Major Poseidon release. Normally would have been written and paid for in the price of the USB device you bought.

When you buy a USB webcam, some of that money goes to the software engineers who wrote the Windows / Linux / Mac USB drivers that came with the device.

You think the Amiga model should be different? You think Amiga software engineers should write classes for other peoples hardware and then release them for free?? I don't think so.

Actually, the Linux drivers have usually been freely developed by the community. If it works for Linux, why not Amiga?

Because a lot of the linux drivers were written by people who got paid to do so. Nothing is really free in this world.

Occasionally there is a driver for a rare device that was written by an enthusiast and is truly unpaid opensource freeware (same goes for Poseidon classes) but I think this is more and more rare.

You think Mozilla or OpenOffice (admittedly not drivers) was written by unpaid enthusiasts?

I think the point being missed by madcrow here is that this income is what motivates & or allows further developments & releases of these drivers,

Common moan in mags in the early nineties was
"Why does this software not run on my A500/512K/KS1.3 Amiga"
& I'm not going to add comment to this one....

Can you get a working key-file by buying a product that comes with Poseidon 3.8 keyfile?

A Subway card, Deneb etc?

Those products do not come with a keyfile. The hardware serves as an OEM dongle which unlocks the demo version.

Hi Alex, it's the other way around.

E3B products work as a hardware dongle - no keyfile is required.
Elbox spider doesn't - a keyfile is required. ( I believe this is also true for all other non-E3B products - eg Thylacine)

I thought that Amithlon (via Arrakattack) also required no keyfile, but from Chris's recent news item regarding the release of Poseidon v4.1 it seems that a keyfile probably is required for this after all. Shame, as I was hoping to try it out on my Poseidon (which also uses Arakattack) once Michael Boehmer polishes the upgrade process for the firmware.

Regards

Rich

EDIT - I believe I mis-read your posts -

probably related to the Elbox hardware acting as a dongle for their own drivers

Yeah, the Elbox disk products work as a dongle for Allegro CDFS

Does anyone have a definitive guide to which versions support which hardware?

V4.x = Highway, Subway, Algor and Deneb cards only (on classic Amigas). Third party drivers will not load.

v3.x = Highway, Subway, Algor, Spider2, ArakAttack (Amithlon) and Thylacine

Somewhere around 2.1b I read that support was dropped for Spider2 (keyfiles stopped working) because of a disagreement with Elbox but somewhere before v3.8 it came back but only for users who had registered already, keys registered after this time would not work with Spider2 driver.

I have bought a full 3.x keyfile, about a year ago. This is a GLOBAL key, that works with AOS, MOS and whatever USB device has a driver, I could even register my subways that came with 3.x licences LOL
I had bought it for a spider2 card, then dropped the A1200 platform and found again use for it with my pegII and pci-usb2.0 cards. Now with MOS2 those USB2.0 cards work fine without a keyfile

Chris' web site (http://www.platon42.de/ ) seems to have gone.

Maybe now the keyfile can be uploaded to the Zone for "preservation" sake ?

Since v4 you don't need a key file, see this thread for recent news on the site being down:

http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=72089

You can download the Poseiden 4.4 here:

But Poseidon 3.8 (for using under Amithlon) still requires a keyfile. Can it be uploaded to the Zone ?

Not legally. While I feel it is poor to leave Poseidon in limbo like Chris H has done, it is his choice.

Like many others before me, I wonder about the source code for Poseidon which was open-sourced for AROS. Could it be back ported to AmigaOS3.x particularly easily? Presumably it is significantly different and the drivers for the Classic Amiga OS hardware not compatible.

So Amithlon users have no other choice but pirating it ?

Yes, or back port the open-source AROS Poseidon.
