Peter my friend, there is absolutely no reason for you to optimize something for 8 color screens
8 colors are just too few and there is no reason that someone would use PNG icons on 8 colors scheme. I just showed it just for you to check it out and that's all.
After all, being able to just show these icons even in ECS environment is just an EPIC job!

My descriptions mean:
- No ColorMapping = Workbench settings >= Poor = old slow method
- ColorMapping = Workbench settings = Bad = new faster method

Keep up the excellent work there, and check my PM \o/

The old and slow method needs a lot of colormapping. That's the reason why it's so slow.

The new fast method reduces the colormapping to the absolute minimum and uses another cache of 512 bytes = colors instead for the mapping.

I've just tried out an 8 color screen here with my modified MWB-palette and I don't have any big problems. Maybe it is already sufficient if you change your palette a little. But of course, everybody has his favourite colors.

Hi PeterK,

I tested Scrollspeedup and wow it's probably twice as fast for loading normal OS4 style icons!!! Of course after they are converted during snapshot they are ridiculously fast

Oh and they look great too, Ultra sharp - I'm using a 24bit Workbench.

I'm using .268 at the moment but will test .269 soon!

Looking good Steve, wish I had a 16bit mode for my A1200.

Tried 46.4.269 with quality = bad and it did look bad with 64 colors (AGA) so I switched back to quality = best.

And none corrected me . I don't even have PC and non-PC 32-bit modes, they we're ARGB / BGRA modes. In both modes icons won't get distorted.

Hi fitzsteve,
your Workbench screenshot is definitely not made while PowerIcons was running. With PowerIcons it would not show any color bands. It would look much better.

@NovaCoder
What is looking so bad? Any screenshots?

@Bamiga2002
Thanks for clarifying that. I was really wondering why truecolor shouldn't work correctly with PowerIcons.

Yeah MasonIcons need a lot of work as MANY of them don't exist for 3.9 installations.
Especially Prefs and some Progs are really hard to find a good one

Look for ab-power (12(1&2 together) through to 8)

Lots of others to try too

Hi Peter,

Ok I tried 128 colors, looks even better and not much slower (also chipram doesn't seem to be really effected).

@NovaCoder
Looks really nice now.

That's the advantage of the new colormapping, it just has to compare a few hundred colors once per screen (not for every icon) and then it reads the mapped pens out of a 512 byte cache. And that makes no difference anymore how many colors the screen has. Only intuition will, of course, still need a little longer for every additional bitplane.

@fitzsteve
Thanks a lot for the scrrenshot again and the link for the icon sets.
I already have them all in my large collection. If your are looking for similar icons, there are some more in the same style on Aminet:
http://aminet.net/search?query=Crystal_Clear

Btw, if you want to add a glow effect to these icons, this can best be done with the tool ImageConverter http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=66213

Icon.library 46.4.270 has been released on Aminet

Great! Downloading...

Edit: Just thinking about how much colors I can use. How much free chip ram does Whdload need to play all the games? I have all the patches to use the mem of my ACA, but how much does it need?

I've only got 1.3mb free but it still seems to run all WHDLOAD games just fine.

I was running in 64 colors but I've now put that up to 128 without much of a hit on chipram or icon speed.
