Is WHDLoad an Emulator?

From what I understand about the excellent WHDLoad, it fixes compatibility issue with games that did not work on certain systems by loading the required KS ROM into memory to emulate the other KS ROM, is that right? if so is that why you need more ram in your Amiga when using WHDLoad than if you were playing the original game from floppys?

If that is true, is it fair to say that WHDLoad is kind of an Amiga emulator on an Amiga?

By the way just for the record, I'm not dissing WHDLoad in any way, I love it and it's awesome, I'm just curious to know how it all works.

WHDLoad is not an emulator. It "just" provides functionality to load data from disk images and stuff like that. Each game/demo has to be patched separately which is done by the slave coders.

OK, thanks for that, the only reason I thought that it might be is the way it needs the KS rom even if you are running it on a system that has the rom, for example an AGA A1200 game played on a real Amiga A1200 will still need the KS rom in the devs/kickstarts folder. I don't really understand why that is, why can't it use the ROM in the system you are using?

whdload use soft roms, not the KS in your 1200. the goal is to not use directly dependancies.

For instance, you need a KS 1.3 rom for a game like cruise for a corpse or operation stealth, while another game running on A1200 will need a KS3.1 in soft.

check on whdload site

I wonder (and I may be wrong) if technically whdload could be classified as virtualisation software, like vmware or virtualbox.
I dont think whdload allows you to switch back and forth between the host and the virtual machine but otherwise it seems pretty close.

It's not really a VM either.
