Hard disks and KS3.0

Well, my HD is 2GB IBM drive that is not recognized in today's hardware. I'm looking to replace it with something that I can plug into WinUAE.

I will have an extra drive which is 5GB but from reading on the net KS3.0 will not recognize it. Is it possible that drive will be recognized in Amiga1200 but that I can use only 4GB out of that disk or whole disk will be unrecognized?

How picky is Amiga with HDs?

It will recognise it, but be careful not to use all of it if you haven't got any patches installed.

So just make your partitions in the lower 4096MB.

Well, I menaged to make my 2GB HD to work with WinUAE. It took some time to figure out how to use HDToolBox and much longer to figure out that HD should be read/write selected. (Toni, this should be default IMHO )

Created partitions, copied ClassicWB to it and all works great!

Thanks!!!

It's probably best to keep it read only as default.. You never know..

Yes, you're right.

After I'm done with another web project, I might create web page with WinUAE/real HD installation instructions. Or will out green alien friend do that in existing tutorials?

Getting HD setup under HDTOolBox is a bit tricky...

I've never had to remove my Amiga hard disk for several years but it's nice to know we have the option to do a complete setup under emulation!

WinUAE is the best.

Yes, Toni is da man!

Is Kickstart 3.1 required to use HD larger then 4GB or there is something else that has to be done as well?

Also I'm looking into IDE to CF as I've read that works great. Is it really worth looking into getting it and getting 1-2 CF cards? (CF cards seem very cheap on ebay and controller cost couple bucks) Ay problems running this setup?

ks3.0 and 3.1 don't make any difference about the 4gb limit...you have 2 options my friend :
- use TD64 patch available on aminet to patch your FastFileSystem and make it access your hd directly to avoid scsi.device 4gb limitation...but you're still limited to 8gb because of another bug i never understood....
- use IDEfix (a commandline to be added to your startup-sequence) to patch scsi.device and use an enhanced filesystem like SFS to avoid both the limitation of native FFS and scsi.device bug. In this case your booting partition must be under the 4GB barrier.
in general avoid partition bigger than 2GB (this is infact the filesize limitation of the amigaOS), the best way to ensure that your files size will stay under 2GB....

about CF 2 IDE :
- i found it really great!! (i'm using a 4gb sandisk)
- be careful about the setup under hdtoolbox (check your maxtransfer partition setting - http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=25149).
- i had issues with old jst installs i was using, i had to add a tool called systempatch to my startup-sequence to avoid this.... cf http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=26317
- i was unable to make idefix work with it...always freezing!!(but not needed as size is 4gb)

good luck!!
