SNES emulation on 060 Amiga? ....Mechwarrior? :)

I gather there is a SNES emulator for the classic Amiga, and I wondered if anybody knew how it would perform on an 060 Voodoo3 machine like mine.

I have wanted a 3D Mech style game on the Amiga for years, and I remembered that there was a version of Mechwarrior on the SNES, so my hope is that I would be able to run that acceptably on my miggy.

Does anybody know or have any suggestions?

I doubt a snes emulator will run OK , or even be usable... I remember trying a WarpOS port of zSnes (running on my 233mhz 604e with g-rex4000D+voodoo3) and it was SLOOOOOOOWWWwwwww

If you really want to play SNES games right, buy one and the cart. Or else get ZSNES or SNES9X, both for Mac OSX and Windows.

Sound advice Fred, but a lot of the fun I'd derive from the exercise would be getting it to run on my Miggy. I've got the original pc Mechwarrior running with PCTask very well, but its graphically a much less demanding game than the SNES version.

Cheers.

I have DreamSnes for the dreamcast and even that has some slowdown! (DC runs at 200mhz with 16mb ram!) I can't really see a snes emulator running on a miggy very well at all

I have a *real* snes so usually use that, otherwise an emulator on PC or MAC is your best bet

Yes it would be fun to see, SNES on Amiga Classic, but only at 5fps i'm afraid.

Even PowerPC at ~200Mhz range fail to do that properly it appears.

10 years ago I played SNES games at full speed in a P1 233 MMX, with Zsnes go figure. I think PC emus were perhaps better optimized from the ground up, Znes in particular was written in Assembler.

Yeah come to think of it, i have never understood why the extra power is needed to run emulators today that ran fine on older systems 10 years ago

Usually due to filters to cleanup the gfx and the result of more precise emulation I'd reckon.

or "weekend coders".

Seriously, if your target audience are running their machines at 3 Ghz plus, and you're tring to emulate a 20 mhz machine I would imagine you would not be obsessive about making optimisations.

What cpu did the snes use?

It's a derivative of the 6502, with 16 bit instructions.
The problem's not the CPU itself, but the otehr co processors that basically did all the work. Just like in the Amiga.

At those times I played with 320x240 and no filtering of course.

Today we bump up the resolution because of LCD monitors, and use 2x,3x or 4x filtering to have a nice picture (as possible).

We got also more accurate emulation. 10 years ago only the essential parts were emulated, and not all the games worked well, or at all.

I just had another thought why old emulators need higher specs these days to run..... imagine trying to run a snes emulator under windows xp or vista on a 200mhz machine....it won't be pretty

The systems OS will immediately bump up the system requirements if it is current/new compared to an OS from over 10 years ago (win 95, 98 etc....).

i played snes games at good speed on my 060 and displayed throught my cybervision 64... the only problem was the lack of sound, i should ask to the guy who did this emulator to make it opensource.
But i swear i played super mario on it without problem i don't know how much fps was displayed but i don't remember that i saw slowdown.
I will look which emulator it was.

I remember running some SNES emulators back in the day on my 486 DX2 66Mhz PC without a video accelerator. Those emulators were primitive compared to modern ones, and to get an okay performance one had to disable the sound completely, which in turn messed up the compatibility.
I believe the only one that ran at decent speeds was NLKSNES, and it had no transparencies or sound.
