Mars dem files for Vista Pro

Hi!

I remember how mars vista-pro rendered images were so talked about in the good old days. I tried to find any dem file of the red planet on the net, but googling only led me to jpg files.

Does anybody know where I should look for them? I mean, my target are DEM files which I can load into Vista Pro and make my own mars renders. Any clue?

Thanks in advance! :)

I wish I could help you, I am looking for these too....

Only places I can think of, would be the USGS survey website, or possibly NASA? I even have the DEM ROM from a LightROM set, and while has has MILES of Kansas plains... NO Mars DEMs... :(

rockersuke 01 December 2011 10:06

Glad to know I was not alone in my Mars DEM search! :)

Deep digging into google showed some mentions of DEM mars files, but all the links were long gone. Further research led me to this 3Dem windows program. Its documentation included links to some NASA repositories of Mars IMG data files and instructions on how to use them (a rather complicated and un-intuitive process that requires downloading whole sets of huge data files). Once everything was setup I could both do some renders and save some portions of the areas into different file formats, includding USGS DEM.

If the selected areas were small enough to produce a DEM file whose size wouldn't collapse the Amiga memory, Vista could handle them... but the final results were very poor and I couldn't make them have the right colours (that was just my own ignorance on the matter :o)

... and right then I discovered that the included "Mons.DEM" in the Vista-Pro standard distribution was actually a map of Mars Olympus Mons volcano... no big deal, but enough for my inmmediate purpose of toying a bit with Mars landscaping! Aah, if I had just read a bit into the manual! :laughing

Guys I may have those mars DEM files. I did many cool animated HAM 8 and DCTV sequences of Mons Caldera :P I'll have to find them though....

If you can find those files, and upload to the Zone, A number of ppl. will be VERY happy!!

Vistapro Mars dems

If anyone is still interested I have the FULL set of VP4 dems which include the majority of Mars (Up to about 80 degrees North and south) it also includes a separate set of equatorial Mars in much higher resolution. Before anyone gets too excited I am a PC user NOT an Amiga user. The files would have to be in PC format as I have no idea what Amiga formats are like!! One of the few emulators I do not have is an Amiga. When all is said and done these files are in my possession if anyone is still in need. One other point VistaPro is still available, at a price, from the manufacturer.

If you could upload all these files to the EAB server it would be much appreciated.
You can read how to gain access to it here: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=43633

to make a start,i've uploaded/zoned the following:
VistaPro_v4.0_Win32.zip (works on win7)
VistaPro.for.Win95-extracted.DEMs.zip
VistaPro.for.Win95.rar

how to access the zone?

treereaver 07 August 2016 02:42

I have uploaded the dem.zip to the zone.

thank you, but it is not in the zone. maybe it was too big?!
filelimit is only 20MB,so you must create a multi part archive,
(winrar can do this) each part max 20mb.

and maybe give it a better name or description, so people can find it later easier on the ftp
(zone files will be backuped in a folder on the ftp)

treereaver 08 August 2016 17:24

I can't find it either! I converted it from .rar to .zip hit upload and waited 10 or 15 seconds and all seemed happy. I will try it again and perhaps try the ftp route.

treereaver 08 August 2016 17:28

Sorry guys, being new to this site I had failed to notice the maximum size is 20MB my file is 147MB.

just create an account on the ftp. as described here.
when done goto the ~Uploads folder an make a new folder with your name - or maybe it is already created.
here you have no filesize limit. filezilla is a good ftp client - just in case you dont have one.

treereaver 08 August 2016 17:43

Help. How do I upload to the ftp site, please? Assume I know nothing! I don't even know what ftp stands for! I am still living in the world of DOS! The file I am trying to upload is "Vistapro 4 dem files.zip"

Thanks in advance

ftp is short for File Transfer Protocoll - transmit files from one pc to another.
here is a howto for filezilla.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3DudpEMPiY

once you created your account here,
you start filezilla and enter the following as seen in the video:
Host: grandis.nu
Username: *your new username*
Password: *your new password*
Port: 21

push [quickconnect]

- on the left side you have your local computer files
---> change to the local directory where you have the dem.zip file
- on the right side is the remote server/ftp site
---> change on the right side to folder ~Uploads/*your new username*
------> if there is no ~Uploads/*your new username*
---------> change to ~Uploads folder --> right mouse-key-menu --> create directory --> name it Treereaver
------------> then change into the folder ~Uploads/Treereaver

once you have the dem.zip file on the left side visble, and the empty folder on the right side,
just drag and drop the dem.zip file to the right side - and upload will start.

it is dead easy, once you understood the prodecure :)

emufan 08 August 2016 18:04

it is really easy, just give it a try. but if you fail, you can use a free filehoster, for example: zippyshare.
post the address/url you get after uploading.

treereaver 08 August 2016 18:28

It won't let me create a folder. it says :-

Command: MKD/~Uploads/Treereaver
Response: 550 Error: Not allowed to make directories here.

you have connected with your new username and password?

if so - just look inside ~Uploads , if there is already a folder with "your new username" already.

edit: i was looking myself - there is no new folder added today. just retry making new folder,
use the exact same name for the folder, as you have choosen your username ( if all lowercase, use all lowercase).

#1) i removed the note, since you have your folder now :)

treereaver 08 August 2016 19:01

I am a great follower; I have a bad habit of following instructions to the letter. Your first response (or should that be your third response) used a capital T in Treereaver but following your next I used a lower case t and it worked to a T.

Thanks a lot. The file is uploading as we speak. The great thing about DOS is it doesn't worry about upper case or lower case.

Right that's it the file is now installed in ~uploads/treereaver as Vistapro 4 dem files.zip. I hope these files will be of use. I, many years ago, made a fly around of the Tharsis area of Mars along the Mariner Valley and around the great volcanos it runs to some 80 MB but was great fun to do.

Once again many, many thanks for your patience and help.

Regards

Trevor

emufan 08 August 2016 19:10

the upper/lower case sensitivity has it's source in the unix world. the ftp server follows this,
i guess it is hosted on a linux machine.
when i gave the instructions, i was'n sure how it did work back then, when i made my account.
i'm glad it is working now and thanks for the DEMs :)

#1) btw: you can enter your ftp data in the site-manager of filezilla, the first icon on the left side of the window.
so it is easier to connect next time.
in site-manager , push "New site" enter host and port, change "Logon type " to "normal" and enter your username and password. "new Site" on the list on the left side , you can rename to maybe "EAB FTP" - push [ok].
the shortcut is accessible by clicking on the little triangle next to the sitemanager button.
