I don't see a problem then really if bandwidth is OK. I could see a use for limiting it if it was affecting the bandwidth, but if everything's fine there's not much point in rocking the boat.

Gzegzolka 06 October 2017 19:42

I vote for no, but I do not like when people use EAB resources and gives no credit for that. There should be better way to solve that.

StingRay 06 October 2017 19:54

Exactly what Leffmann said! Voted no.

With that kind of thinking, you'll never get anywhere. The a1k people could point to entity X ("they did restrict access to their stuff before we did!"), entity X points to entity Y...

I think it's a more complex issue with no real solution.
It's not complex at all. Do as you expect others to do.

Everybody who ever downloaded something from Aminet should shut up anyway ;)

It s a fact that then we will have people that register just to leech stuff, so it's not like it matters if they are part of EAB or not. I rather not see hundreds of bogus accounts.
Exactly. I don't see what good this does for anybody (unless bandwidth/traffic is an issue on the FTP server), it's just going to create more work.

Thanks a lot to Turran for the server, btw. Excellent ressource.

mrbob2 06 October 2017 20:21

i voted yes, only members should benefit from being members of this fourm :)

i just wonder if that was the case, you might get 1000s of new users just joining this site to access the server then just becoming 1 post members....

still, i feel that my decision is correct. members benefits for members only.

...oh that's quite ironic coming from you.

Do I need to remind you of this lovely thread: Trademark disputes?

MigaTech 06 October 2017 20:53

One of the main reasons I did not join sooner to this website, was down to having access to the threads, without member status.

I was going to join many years back but just put it off as accessing the threads was still possible.

Forgive me for stating this but on average this website gains most of its high hits from non members.< OK they may not be repeated returning hits like loyal members, still you should think of hits as everything nowadays.

So I would say keep it as it is, otherwise making it trade only would destroy its hit count. Or am I way off on this one?

Turran 06 October 2017 22:00

I've opened access to the command "site who" to everyone for fun. Now anyone can have a look at the current load by issuing the "site who" command.

Not sure how you send commands in Filezilla. In FlashFXP its CTRL-R

@DamienD
Maybe your own FTP line is restricted in some way by your ISP as it is old and insecure? It is stated that bandwidth is not an issue and leechers are not responsible for your slowdowns?
I cannot vote for anything because i'm a newbee and will follow whatever comes out but because you have an imperfect connection why change the whole thing?

DamienD 06 October 2017 22:05

*** ooops, sorry guys, I deleted / re-added my post while you put your replies in. Now things look out of whack ***

Personally I'd say yes ;)

We are not talking about the "forum" EAB; this is completely accessible to all (guests included) and nothing is restricted in terms of what content you can see in threads / posts without needing to register. Unlike other well known Amiga forums...

Also, I don't really think RCK is bothered one bit by hits / stats (again, unlike other well known Amiga forums). That's not why we are here...

We are talking about the "EAB File Server" which is without doubt the best Amiga FTP / resource on the internet :agree

There are loads of other internet sites / forums taking advantage of this (without giving due credit) for all the hard work etc. that comes from our members and is occurring because of lax security i.e. it's totally open.

...and as mentioned in the other thread, on quite a number of occasions, I've noticed massive slowdowns in downloading / uploading. The only conclusion I can come to is that it's being hammered (and probably not by EAB members) :sad

MigaTech 06 October 2017 22:05

@DamienD, now you explain it this way, it makes more sense. < I obviously retract my first statement and agree with you and others on this.

Nah man, one day all is cool and then sometimes shite... Other FTPs / hosting sites tested at the same time are good.

I've been working for 20+ years as a 3rd line Technical Analyst in IT (plus have networking skills); I think I would know if something is up with my ISP plus if that was the case from my analysis / tests; would have definitely taken measures to rectify with the ISP and if they couldn't resolve; changed providers :agree

See this post: http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=...postcount=1474

...it's not the first time this has occurred over the past 6 months. Never used to be that way...

Phantom 06 October 2017 22:50

I voted yes. Although if this finally happens, it means that the server will be something like "private", then in order to avoid new created accounts just for leeching stuff from the FTP server, a solution should be to login with your credentials and/or reaching a decent amount of posts on EAB (ie over 20-30 posts).

Amiga1992 06 October 2017 23:08

Hmmm, why can't I change my vote? I thought you used to be able to.
Anyway, I changed my mind, after reading the pro "Nay"s. Maybe we should indeed set the example by not limiting content like in other websites. Its been like that for years, and it works. I don't mind the speeds. I get solid 200/400kb/s, that's more than enough for me!!

This change of thought doesn't mean I agree that other websites link to it, I think that's cheeky, as I expressed before.

Anyway, I hope you can change my vote, DamienD.

Sure Akira; not that I really want to be tampering with the poll (as I'll probably then be accused of something by my various "friends"); but if need be, I can edit / change vote statistics.

Done, your vote has been changed and the statistics adjusted accordingly!!! i.e -1 from agree and +1 for against ;)

alpine9000 07 October 2017 02:35

I voted “no” because when it comes to Amiga stuff, if the question is “should this be locked away or open”, I will always answer “open”.

In my ideal world everything from the OS to binaries (and source) to all our favourite games, demo’s, utils and programs would be easy to find and download for anyone that loves the Amiga enough to spend the time downloading it.

Instead almost everything is locked and hidden away.

apex 07 October 2017 13:52

I would say yes. Add the access after 10 postings, this will avoid strange guys. ;)

Yeah, that was a bit harsh regarding Lemon Amiga Akira.

Personally I really like Lemon Amiga; in my eyes they are our brother site :agree

Many reasons really:

a) Cool "Amiga" feel webpage with nice skinning option from some of your favourite games (for me I choose "Beast").
b) I love the "scanlines" option when looking at screenshots (wish HOL would do that).
c) We usually share information with them (and vice versa).
d) The members there are usually EAB members also.
e) There are fun game competitions between us; which are hosted on both sites.
f) ...other reasons I've forgotten to mention.
