Finally after a very long time and many tries/purchases I managed to get a PS/2 keyboard working on the CD32 + TF330. But that's off topic.

I was able to give Dread demo a try and I'm blown away already. It's butter smooth, I get 1.35 - 1.50 speeds (hmm how many fps is that?), looks good, fills almost the whole screen. I like WSAD+mouse control too although CD32 pad support would be best for those without a keyboard.

I encountered some glitches with sound: artifacts like a short beep after killing an enemy, sometimes no gun sound.
As far as gameplay is concerned, there's obviously some elements missing that were already mentioned: stairs, elevators, music, floor and ceiling texturing. Maybe optionally so that it keeps its FPS on the stock A500 if you want.

I do like this demo map how it's laid out.

This would've been a total blast back then, and it will be nowadays too I'm sure! Great work

According to Pixel Shade answer's to EgonOlsen71 in the Y@utube comments of the latest video, it's about 33-37 fps

Disable your extended ROM using the jumper and it should work.

Have you disabled cpu caches?

An awesome achievement. Very smooth on A1200 with some fastmem.

WASD + mouse is a special feeling on a real Amiga with original ball-mouse. Wedge Amigas was made for this

If sensitivity could go a bit higher it would be compatible with 90's mousepads aswell, not only the large slabs they use today

Very difficult to get this first demo up and running on modest amiga setups.

1. The game refuses to start under CGX -> grey screen
2. 68060 in AGA mode will get you to the pattern fill, no title
3. disable cpu cache and it comes to life

FPS or what? readings can vary from 1.40 to 1.90, by the looks it is running fairly smooth above 20 frames

4. On a UAE / 68020 setup with P96 also not working - get to the title screen and hangs

5. Keyboard controll is incomplete, seriously, any way to shoot ?
I guess this will be completed a bit later, but either full keyboard option
or full cd32 pad would be nice, similar to gloom with strafing on side peddles.

6. Moving backwards often clips you behind walls,
and 360 rotation is not working here, more like +/- 90 deg limits,
no way to go back and seeing where you go.

A little bit more system friendly would help a lot, maybe with the help of whdload
knowledge on how to overtake the system. Yet it would be nice to see
a fully OS friendly implementation with window/rtg mode for completeness,
obviously in the enhanced version only, so that the default binary still runs on the
target low end systems.

In all other aspects a very impressive engine.

CGX and 060 are 'modest'?

Divide the reading by 50, this will give you your framerate. This is explained earlier in this thread and on the release video comments.

COntrols and clipping - this is a demo, consider it an 'alpha'. Improvements will come in later releases no doubt.

This is a system friendly demo! you can launch it from the workbench or from an adf. The purpose is to use original hardware and maximise what can be achieved from that, not through using RTG or AGA or anything else. I think you may have missed the point of KK's exercise here.

I guess CGX, 060, and AGA are just too modest
Maybe try it on something a bit beefier

I have 2 "real" Amiga's and both ran the demo. Either from floppy or from HD.
But really, when you have a "modestly expanded" Amiga, you probably had to do the "disable caches" trick before? Back in the day I did it all the time to run older software.

Now, one issue I did had is that I got no sound at all on my A3000. Dunno why ?

You perhaps have 68040 or 68060 in your A3000. No sound, due bug.

I heard that game uses self modyfiyng code, then instruction cache must be disabled, if SMC is really needed for code speed. Almost always SMC can be replaced with no SMC for same or even better speed, dependent to routine.

I couldn't get the demo working either on my real Amiga or in WINUAE. Using a 060 on A1200.

So it is recommended I disable CPU cache then?

Running the exe brought up an error saying the file wasn't an executable, mounting the ADF and then trying to run that loaded the game, but upon starting the level the display is are garbled and distorted and then crashes the system.

Yes, either disable cpu caches in the early startup menu, or via the cpu command. It works fine after that.

Can I ask if there are any intentions on adding CD32 joypad support to the game, maybe with the shoulder buttons for straffing, red fire, blue use, yellow and green cycle weapons, the dpad would obviously be for move?

Or alternatively is there anything I can run in the background to map CD32 button presses to the keyboard and mouse at the same time?

Disabled the CPU cache in early startup, and so far same thing using WINUAE. It will play for a few seconds before display goes nuts and system freezes.

Just tried it again here (real 1200 with 060 right enough) to confirm I'm not mad
  • Disabled CPU caches in early start menu
  • Booted with no startup sequence
  • Moved to the DREAD directory
  • Ran the exe

I don't have a such a jumper. I WHDLoad fixes this issue and system friendly apps/games works any way.

I couldn't get it work that way either on my A1200 with 68060 accelerator.

Tried that but it kept saying the exe file wasn't an executable. I then just booted as normal with the nocache entry still in startup-sequence and it actually ran. However when I finished the level I couldn't exit the game and I had no sound. Is there supposed to be sound or has that been added yet?

Have feeling it might be flaky running it in future as in it might not load everytime.

Over all experience was great, it's smooth as butter on my system and I can only imagine a huge game of this would be amazing. It looks fantastic too and I'm sure the finished article will be really well polished. Will give it another few goes later on I think.
